| I'm not sure why marriage should be a legal issue at all. |

Yes, I understand. Let me rephrase:
Why should we have a legal contract between people that is called Marriage?
The issue seems to be the tax benefits and dependant benefits that go along with this personal contract we call marriage. Why not end that, and, for the sake of our relationship with the government, have something called a "personal contract." It would be for the purpose of taxation, employment benefits, ownership rights, and the like. Right now, for example, it may be a hassle for two sisters who have long lived together to confer benefits on one another through employment, enter into joint legal contracts, and other aspects of married life that have to do with the state. Why should it be? So, why is there legally recognized marriage at all? |

I'm figuring it is some sort of scheme for lawyers to make money. can't have something simple got to make it complicated so lawyers can bill someone.

Hmmm. ON second thought, my method would be a hay-day for lawyers. Too many posibilities and combinations. 1 year contracts, 3 year, 7 year, life... breach of contract suits.
On third thought: cheaper than catering. |

Because our tax code is extremely complicated and it is an easy way for the average joe to keep some of his money.
Other than what happens to your belongings when you die, nothing else is really affected (legally) by marriage.
Dependants don't require a legal tie to be a responsibility for both parents (it just simplifies matters.)

Right. So why all the restrictions? Why not make it more free, and let people engage in the type of personal contract they want?
I'm a borderline anarchist, so take it with a grain of salt. |
