Good ol' Geddy Lee can't go high anymore either.

As for the Bee Gees being manly men? Shit. Back in the day, they'd launch into their first song in a concert and panties would melt off the women. Made no sense then, makes no sense now. ESPECIALLY considering what 2 out of 3 them looked like. Put glasses on the Gibb on the left, cut his hair slightly, and you have Austin Powers. The one on the right? I dunno, but I think it's Chuck Mangione.

But everyone looooooooved them.

Michael Jackson too. Make sense out of that.

Then again, I remember an Aunt who was appalled to find out that Liberace was... gulp... gay. (which is extra weird, because it wasn't exactly hidden...)

My piano teacher had a giant signed poster of him. Was never sure what to think about that.

Well, they're probably not including their mothers in the bitch category.

Yes. Perhaps the mothers are in the "chit" category, which bitches ain't.

I mean, isn't being "the shit" something good?

Agreed. The chorus on "Tiny Dancer" just isn't the same. I imagine he doesn't even do "Crocodile Rock" anymore. Cocaine and weed, yes, but I'm sure some of that is just age.

Some singer's pipes age well, and some don't. EJ is one who hasn't. Robert Plant's is one who's lost a of range, for example. However, he still maintains a rough, smoky quality that is entirely cool-sounding and fits the music. McCartney still sounds golden -- he tore into "Helter Skelter" on the last tour like he was still 26.

I remember hearing that all of his songs are still played in the same key, with the exception of "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and something else, can't remember... but those two pieces are taken down only a half step.

Believe it or not, he does still perform "Crocodile Rock."

Obviously, a lot of the high notes on all the pieces are taken down. It's hard for me to admit that age and drug use has caught up with him and that he'll never quite sing like that again.

Elton says he likes his voice better now.

I think it all went south after '75. Sad

Was thinking about good falsettos after reading this thread:

How about Freddy Fender, Frankie Valli, or the immortal Roy Orbison? Those guys were cool, not just trendy. Some of their music is still in print, which is saying a lot for artists of their era.

You're right. They're still awesome live - but comparing to the old recordings he sings a little lower.

Geoff Tate is battling the same. We saw him in 'Operation Mindcrime I" and the year later 'O MC II". The first was the beginning of the tour in Seattle - dead on performance. The second year was the end of their tour and he seemed to all of a sudden have lost his voice in a particularly high part. Just went several octaves lower and added more drama to the theatrical part of his performance.

James LaBrie always drinks warm water with honey during the shows. That's why the band seems to have such long instrumental sections?! He was asked about it once and stated it was to sort of oil his vocal cords. We saw them during 'Progressive Nation' in May, one of their first stops. Amazing performance.

Jeff, your observation on Robert Plant's voice was right on - he's still got it.

I love powerful voices! David Coverdale, Ronny James Dio, Bruce Dickinson ...

Right, we were talking Bee Gee's Wink... not my favorite style of music, but I do admire their vocal performance.
