Sub-20 Goal for 5k (2012) (Read 5406 times)

Mmmmm...beer

Dammit! The course was short!!  They had to change the course at the last minute to go around some construction, and I guess no one thought that it might be a good idea to verify the distance of the new course.  Most estimates put it around 2.8 miles.  I knew there was no way I ran an 18:34, especially with the hills that kicked my butt.  I'm gonna find another race for Dec and try again.

Nice job Steve!  Great way to wrap up the running year, and a nice starting point for the goal setting in 2013.  Time to get that 1:35 half next!

I know that placing in the masters category adds to the fun too (I'm 41 and enjoying the same).  Congrats!

Dave, dont sweat it, I think your time projects well to the full distance, so yes, find one more and you'll get it done this year for sure.

Thanks lagwagon (great band btw).  I found a race this Sat that I'm gonna run, it'll be nice and flat, so that will help, and it's run by the local club, so I know the distance will be good and the miles will be marked.  I couldn't even time my splits last week, no mile markers!

          Hey everybody!

I am another RWOL refugee, I participated alot in the sub 20 thread over there.

I have been chasing a sub 20 since June. I had a great three month block of mileage but once the season started (I am a highschool cross country runner) I went backwards. Somehow managed a 22:11 on a tough course. I never ran within a minute of that again, I got slower and slower until my last race of a 24:51.

I now have about 10 months to train on my own, and hopefully throw down some good times.

Im looking forward to discuss training and other stuff

Also a RW refugee.  Been chasing sub-20:00 all year, PR is 20:21 this past April.  I'm running more miles and feeling stronger lately, and was on track to at least PR at a 5K last week, which ended up being short (2.67 miles), ran a 17:22.  Hello everyone.

            Mile 5:49 - 5K 19:58 - 10K 43:06 - HM 1:36:54

Dave - It's a shame the course was short. That's always so frustrating. But it looks like you're on track! Good luck in the next one.

Brad & MJ5 - Hello and welcome. I recognize both of you from the sub-20 thread on RW, which I participated in briefly before I started having trouble posting on the site - for some reason it would only load properly 50% of the time on my work computer. Anyway, nice to see you again and I hope the training is going well.

Heya MJ!  I feel your pain, same thing happened to me last week.  Going to try again on Sat, on a nice, flat course this time. Smile  Those hills were killer, wouldn't have gone sub-20 even if the course had been true.

Yes, I feel like I'm getting closer and more ready than in the past.  The only thing I've really changed is upping my mileage, and not even by a crazy amount, probably an average of 5-7 more miles per week than I was in the spring (on the advice of MothAudio).  The pace I was holding for the short 5K was much more comfortable than it had been--usually I fall apart in the 2nd mile.  Plus, I had two really great longer races (a half and a 9 miler) that I felt great during.  Of course I'm feeling great heading into not-race-season.  I'm doing one more 5K this weekend then going to try some periodization training that will peak me around the last week of May/first week of June just to see how it goes.

Dtothe2nd - I'll be at Shamrock weekend too, doing the 8K.  I'm going with a big group of people myself (my sis-in-law, my brother, their friends, and my cousin) so I'm not sure if I'll be able to FE but you'll have to let me know your bib # so I can cheer for you!  I will be cheering for the rest of my posse at the half. Smile

                    Mile 5:49 - 5K 19:58 - 10K 43:06 - HM 1:36:54

Sounds like a plan MJ.  My wife and son are running the 8k, so I'll cheer for all of you guys. Smile

Hello all. Sub-20 is one of my 2013 goals. I had a great 2012. My 2011 personal best was 24:29 and I went sub-21 in May 2012.

                        Personal Bests:

                        800M - 2:38 (5/28/13) | 1 Mile -5:54 (5/28/13) | 3K - 11:55 (12/29/12) | 2M - 13:00 (12/1/12) | 5K - 20:00 (4/12/13) | 13.1M - 1:37:24 (2/3/13)

I don't post a lot, but I thought I would come in and say hello.  I ran 20:03 about a week ago and hope to go sub 20 in 2013.  I don't think I will race again until March or April, so I will concentrate in base building over the next few months.  My primary goal in 2013 is to prepare for and run in my first marathon in the fall.  If training goes well, I may have a chance to break my 5K, 10K and HM PRs along the way.

I have run off and on before in my life, but this is the first time I have ever run more than 500 miles in a year.  I am on track to run a bit more than 1,000 miles this year and would like to almost double that amount in 2013.

I'll check-in from time to time to see how everyone is doing.

Yeah, I'm a middle aged guy still listening to 90's (and newer) punk, drinking much beer, and running stupid miles, like I'm stuck in college (except with a wife, kid, house and job.)

Thanks for the s/o, its cool to know someone else appreciates them.  fwiw, I'm digging the Joey Cape / Tony Sly (rip) acoustic split, worth the download.

Have a good race this weekend!

Also, a warm welcome to all the newcomers!!

As this is a racing forum, I want to mention that I find it tremendously useful to browse people's logs in this and the other racing threads (esp sub 90 HM thread.)  Its part of what makes RA great.

You can look at the people who are close to your level, or who made it to your goal, and see what distances they train, at what paces, etc.  Also fun to see others PRs.  For example after looking at a bunch of logs in the sub 90 thread, I decided I needed more miles to "compete".  It was what I needed to set a new PR.  It'll also open the door to advice from some tremendously knowledgeable people here.

Consider opening your log, if you havent already.

To make it visible, its easy, go to Options->My log Prefs->Training log access.  Pick the fourth option.  Note, you can still keep your maps private if you want (that option is a little further down same screen).

Good luck and see you round!
