I look my best blurry!
wannabe - just because someone suggests advice that you may not like, dosen't mean that they are trying to intentionally bring you down. You should listen to Tchuck and Nobby - they have a ton of experience between them. Personally - (although I have no experience) - I would tend to err on the side of caution, especially in the case of a stress fracture. You can't ever be too careful with that. 6 weeks of no running is nothing compared to what could happen. If you are aquajogging with pain - then you are not healing well, and might want to scale it back a bit. Pain is what our body uses to tell us something is broken. this forum is meant to be a helpful place, and the right advice is not always the advice that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. You don't have to take the advice, but I'd at least listen to it.

That's not what I meant! I knew they would potentially scold me. They now how and have scolded me without everyone being able to read it! I respect them both and appreciate all they say. I have less than a week until I see the orthopedic surgeon. I have been a good patient and have totally eliminated my impact workouts, except my dancing the other night. I did get a little tipsy but not drunk. I had so much fun! I don't think I am any worse for the wear, honestly! And for the record it does not hurt at all when I run in the water. It doesn't feel any worse after a workout. The symptoms are somewhat better now than 5 1/2 weeks ago but they aren't gone. So, I have scaled back my water workouts both in intensity and duration. I was so hopeful that I would be 100% pain free after this 6 weeks. I would bet the stress fracture has healed. I think my gluteus minimus tendonopathy or labrum issue may be the culprit of my discomfort.
Are you running any pre-Pittsburgh marathon races?
i am stupid too. in '04 got all all drunk at a wedding, took my shoes off so i could really let loose and blew out my left knee. that season was ruined. to this day it still ain't right. booze is the enemy, for me anyway, but damn it's fun.
Music is the enemy for me. I can't stop myself from moving when I hear a song I love! Sorry about the knee.

haha - ok that's good! hope you are back to normal soon!
i'm not sure... right now I'm not really training for anything. I can't do Pittsburgh - and I'm not sure I feel like committing for another cycle of marathon training. Right now, I'm just running for the heck of it - and I'm enjoying it more now than I ever did when I actually had a goal. I'll probably do a 5K or 10K sometimes soon. Maybe another half.... we'll see!
I don't half-ass anything

I'm still in my "can't run" phase, which is fine because my ankle still hurts. I'm thinking about doing running for fun when I can and rebuilding a base while also adding in some more speedwork - I had gotten a little lazy with the speedwork before. However, I caught myself looking up race schedules earlier today, so who knows if this "run for fun" will last long when I can finally do it!

Tomorrow
I love ya tomorrow
You're always a day away...
I'm not completely out of the woods but I am feeling optimistic.
How is everyone else doing?
OMG! I can run! The doc did a series of x-rays and thinks I am pretty much healed as far as the stress fracture goes. Now don't laugh. I can walk 2-3 miles and then run 1/4 mile every other day this week. 1/2 mile next week. 3/4 mile the 3rd week, and so on. Alternating days I can do my water running. I am so freaking happy! I am still having some pain but the doc feels like it is coming from my gluteus minimus tendon insertion. He thinks it will keep getting better. He will do a cortisone injection in a few weeks if I am still having trouble. I'm not completely out of the woods but I am feeling optimistic. How is everyone else doing?
Congrats, wannaberunner. However, did you know that it's the first 3 weeks after you get back to running when most people get re-injured. So I'd suggest you still restrict your running to no more than ONE mile every other day.
Actually, I'm just $hitting you. Get out and enjoy spring!!
One thing I guess I didn't even consider and now you're telling us... The pain or soreness you experienced from aqua-running might very well possibly be some muscle group(s) you hadn't really used from running alone and may be nothing to do with actual stress fracture. In fact, I always get a certain soreness and pain when I get hurt and do either NordicTrack and/or stationary bike--like sore butt from stationary bike! ;o)
I would still not encourage you to try out the half marathon--when did you say it would be? June?--; well, I guess if you have enough time, it may not be that terrible...??? One thing is that I would NOT encourage a cortisone shot if you can at all avoid it.
Lucky you that it's cleared now when the weather is getting better. It would have driven you nuts if you'd still be restricted from running! Congrats again.

With the plan my doc has me on it will be 4 weeks before I can run a mile! Thanks Nobby. Don't worry. I'll be good. I hope the aches and pains go away. I don't want any more setbacks.
Kristen,
Hopefully, the problems are behind. Happy that you got clearance to do some running. Follow the plan, run easy and slowly build. Are doing some strength work for glutes and basic core movements? Doing stuff while on feet is key because running is on our feet. I do like the bridge though and planks. Gluteus maximus, medius and minimus are very very key muscles for running. Buy a work out band wrap around ankle and walk side ways for medius or just use body weight. For maximus, bring leg behind you and squeeze the butt. Also, with no equipment do squats and lunges with variations (see attached) are excellent to develop the soft tissue around hip and take stress off the joint/labrum and help you perform better and more resistant to injury. I think with your background you know about these things.

Sorry for a personal note:
Wannaberunner and John-A:
I've been trying to send you an e-mail but they just keep coming back. If you haven't heard from me in the last couple of weeks, this is why and I'm having a problem. Why don't you send me a message to nobby@lydiardfoundation.org and see if this one works... Well, I guess I can try to send it from there as well, huh???
YAY! As I'm reading this late, I'm sure you're doing the miles by now!
I don't even have a plan for return from my ankle sfx - the doc just said "no running for six weeks" - which puts me at April 1, but planning to work back to running very slowly. I'm still a little tender walking even.

I have run a mile total for the week! It's ridiculous but I am sticking with it pretty much. I have to say that my legs just feel weird even walking for exercise. I can tell it is going to take a little time to really get back to running. I aqua ran my butt off to stay in shape. I thought that my aqua running would make me feel like I would want to just take off but I feel as if I have developed different muscles and the running muscles are weak. I feel out of whack. (Although I should add, I feel like I have maintained my cardiac fitness level and I have been doing an upper body routine. I have nicely toned arms for a change!) My glutes on the injured side are definitely weak. I am working on a strengthening routine to try to develop my hip muscules to support my hip. I bet it will be a month before I'm really adding many miles. However, I am making progress. I had to take 6 weeks off from running. I think it will take me another 6 to get back into running well. We'll see.
Good luck and do what you can do in the meantime to stay in shape.
