I used to have one that attached to my glasses/sunglasses. It was a little bigger than a dentist's mirror, but was big enough to see cars behind me. May have to go track that down again...

I am also in Orlando, and am shocked and saddened by this attack.

I've never run at this particular park, but it's all too easy to find yourself in that zone and not paying attention... (I run in my neighborhood and Cady Way occasionally)

Seeing the headline gave me the chills. Maybe it's time to drag hubby off his rear for some company...

Run free, Nicole.

My runs lately (which are in Ft. Myers for the summer, not Orlando or Oviedo) have been iPod-less.

I like to run with the iPod. I admit it.

And now I do not.

I have to go to Orlando for work next week. Maybe I'll stick to the treadmill.

I hope nobody takes this the wrong way. I don't wish to impose my ideas on anyone, but I have a good deal of training in self-defense. I think you will find many attackers do not make long-term plans, and they are attackers of opportunity. Anything, and I mean anything, you can do to complicate his hasty plan may save your life.

Always remember, there are people who love you who need to see you again. Even if you find yourself in a situation you can't imagine, do something to stay alive. A bad plan RIGHT NOW is better than a perfect plan five seconds from now. It really happens that fast.

I'm not selling anything, but here is a product for untrained users that is virtually guaranteed to complicate the plan of an attacker. My wife carries one on her key ring. There are no guarantees, but this is tiny enough to carry anywhere.

I'm a Christian man, and I don't wish violence on anyone, but the ladies out there who run alone should consider carrying some kind of countermeasure. Every second longer it takes a predator to carry out his plan increses your chance of survival. I've had many professional classes on self defense, and your chances of being unharmed are usually much better if you offer resistance of some kind.

One more thing...

If you see anything that is unusual, suspicious, or out of the ordinary...

Say to yourself, "This is bad," and get out of there ASAP. Don't second guess your instincts. If it's not normal for the activity you find yourself in, get out. Just get out.

Better to cut a run short than to talk yourself into danger.

I have to disagree. Carrying a knife for self defense - or any other weapon - when you're not trained with it is generally a bad idea. If you're going to be carrying a weapon you need to be both mentally and physically trained for it. You have to know in your heart of hearts that you could kill someone else with it... otherwise you'll hesitate and likely give your attacker a weapon.

There are "personal alarms" out there that let out a screeching high and very very loud noise that would be a much better choice.

Never carry anything you're not willing to have used against you.

It is a terrible thing that happened. I also live in the Orlando area and from what I've heard it was a random attack. It was between rain storms that day & not very many people were out. Usually that trail is heavily used. I've run a race there & it DID seem very nice. As someone else said bad people drive . It's very disturbing that this happened so close to home.

However, I don't think Orlando is a bad place to run overall. It's like any where else, you have to be aware of your surroundings. In saying that I guess anything can happen to anyone wherever they are. You're right about OBT (Orange Blossom Trail) you wouldn't want to run there. I don't even like driving on some parts of that road & I work not too far from there.

Take care everyone & be careful!

Hi vkay,

Do you by chance run with the Orlando Runners Club? I'm thinking about joining in August. I'm also looking to starting a running club at UCF. UCF, the 4th largest university in the United States, does not have a rec running club!

The latest news on the case:

'Persons of interest' may provide answers to student's death

to the fore-no I don't belong to the Orlando Runners club. West Orange is starting a club next month & I'm going to join theirs. I live on the west side of town so it'll be more convenient. Hard to belive UCF doesn't have anything going on. I think that's a good idea to try to get something going there! Good Luck!!

I've decided to make my log here private. I always run alone and it's too easy for any random crazy to look at the log and see my nicely mapped routes to find out where and what days and times I run.

Mel, you can make your maps private and still have your log be public. Just an FYI.
