    Bob, you're an idiot. A wonderful, gritty idiot.

    Ribs: Thanks for the article. I have to get on my equality high horse just to suggest an important correction.

    Also, Bob pointed out to me that while he was the first American male, he was not the first American.  In fact, two U.S. women finished ahead of him. Women are extraordinary ultra runners as many of you know.

    I know what you meant and I know it was not intended as a sexist comment. However, it would have been better to comment on the fact that the gap between male and female performance in ultra marathons tends to zero.

    Again, this is me being a pedant for equality rather than any comment on your views on women.

      I take your point entirely, which is why I used the word "ultra".  At shorter distances the gap is significant, but women are awesome the longer the race.  Thank you.  Spareribs

        We are the music makers,

            And we are the dreamers of dreams,

        Wandering by lone sea-breakers,

            And sitting by desolate streams;

        World-losers and world-forsakers,

            On whom the pale moon gleams:

        Yet we are the movers and shakers

            Of the world for ever, it seems.

                I was wondering where John Cash was. Is he going to try for the 2017 team? He had a great DS last year.

                  Bob, amazing accomplishment.

                    Can't speak for him; but, he's planning to run D3.
