hah...you should have seen Three Dog Night in concert in the late 80's to find out that the lead singer is a sport fisherman on one of the major fishing shows....
or...the time I said something about Twin Sons of Different Mothers (Weisberg/fogleberg) to a young lady and she looked at me like I was from some other planet. I just said...I guess that was before your time.... |

I'm not a Skynard purist, but regardless of what you call them, they can play, and they put on a hell of a show. But yeah, I think that there are only two original members in the band. |

Then they should call themselves something else.
That would be like going to see Foghat with only the original bass player in the group. LAME.
Even lamer than if it was real Foghat. |

I'm generally okay with this, but I think it depends a lot on how big of a fan you are of the band and/or how important/visible the individual members are. I'll admit to being inconsistent on this. For example, since I'm (thankfully) not a huge Foghat fan, I feel like they can call themselves whatever they want.
Here's a few test cases for you:
Fleetwood Mac -- only two orginal members, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. I'm ok with this since I'm very unfamiliar with the original late 60's Peter Green-led outfit.
Pink Floyd -- are they still Floyd w/o Waters?. I'm ok with this one, but would love one more tour with Waters. Purists who have said for years that it isn't Floyd w/o Syd Barrett can blow me. He sucked.
Guns 'N' Roses: I call bogus on the Axl w/ a few other guys version.
Genesis without Steve Hackett and Peter Gabriel: Ok by me, but w/o Phil, it's a total no-go.
Skynard: I'm ok with them as is now.
Zeppelin: I accept Jason Bonham if the three remaining mighty ones do.
The Who: Sorry, hard for me to call just Townsend and Daltry The Who without Moon and Entwhistle.
The Beatles: Ok, obviously if Paul and Ringo decide to go on tour, it ain't the Beatles without George and John. It wouldn't have been the Beatles without any one of them, even Ringo (though if Ringo were dead and the other three were alive and toured with Ringo's son Zack (who happens to be The Who's current drummer, BTW), would it be the Beatles? I still say no.) Funny tidbit, Paul joked a few years ago that the surviving members of The Beatles and The Who had all the pieces (bassist, drummer, lead singer, guitarist) to form a band called The Who-tles. |

^^ I agree with all of that except:
Fleetwood Mac: Was a very different band with Peter Green, no doubt. But without Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, and Christie McVie...shit, there's nothing left. On a side note, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Peter Green all played with John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, which is the reason original FM was very bluesy before it was pop centric.
Genesis is not Genesis w/o Peter Gabriel.
The Who: I am ok with just Roger and Pete. Moon died years ago.
G n' R: Bullshit without Slash. Agreed. |

My original question is whether it's still Fleetwood Mac if there are only two original members in it (Fleetwood and Mac). This was meant more tongue-in-cheek than anything else since the world knows FM as the Fleetwood-McVie^2-Nicks-Buckingham outfit. Would definitely not pass as FM w/o Buckingham and Nicks, but they recently recorded without Christie McVie, who decided to pass on it. I've got no problem with that.

Agreed.
Though the real Who died when Moon died, I could go along with it while Entwhistle was still alive.
Now they should just call themselves The Nose and Pecs.
