Who wants to help a runner with a class project? (Read 720 times)

Diesel Power

    Hi  everyone -

I help with a school project that I'm working on.  I'm hoping that everyone here would be willing to take a minute of their time to complete a very brief survey.  If you do not feel comfortable posting your responses on the forum, please feel  free to email me at rschaffer2@gmail.com

    1) Race X and Race Y (both 5Ks) are scheduled on the same morning. They both cost $30 to enter. Race X offers awards (i.e., trophies or medals) for the top three in each age group (ten year increments), as well as technical t-shirts for the first 200 participants. Race Y offers a certificate to the winner of each age group (ten year increments) and a 100% cotton t-shirt. The two races take place equidistance from where you live, and are for charities that are meaningful to you.

Assuming you want to run a race that morning, what is your largest determinant in choosing between Race X and Race Y?
    a) Age group award
    b) Race shirt
    c) Other (Provide response)

    2) Now, assume entrance fees and amenities for Race X and Race Y are equal. Assume Race X is held on a grassy surface in a park, and Race Y is held entirely on a concrete surface. If the elevation of the races is about equal, which would you prefer?

    a) Race X (grass)
    b) Race Y (road)

    3) Assuming two races have the same entrance fee and similar charities...

    A.  Are you more likely, less likely, or just as likely to do a road race that has awards for the top three in each age group than a road race that does not?

    B. Would you be more likely, less likely, or just as likely to do a road race that offers a techinical/training shirt than a road race that offers a 100% cotton shirt?

Again,  thank you very much for participating!  This will go a long way in helping me ace this course.

      1: b

2: a (though if the choice were asphalt or grass I would probably lean towards the asphalt)

3A: equally likely...unless it were a REALLY small field.  The odds of me placing in my AG are so miniscule, anyhow.

3B:  more likely to choose the race with the technical shirt--I will actually USE those, rather than get tired of them piling up and giving them to Goodwill or as garage rags.

My answers are similar to zoomies, but with more detailed caveats (eg, if Grim Reaper is coming to race A, then I prefer race B, heh) -- and I emailed them.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

          1)  Race Shirt - always need a new beach coverup/comfy shirt

          2)  Road  - never have liked running on grass, I've rolled my ankles enough.

          3)  more likely to go with the tech shirt - reasons are I don't come close to top three ever and I'm a running gear junkie.

you should share your results when you are done.  good luck

As long as you can outrun the Grim Reaper you are safe.  Apparently some peeps in the past week were slower than the Grim Reaper.

              1) - wow - probably other (people I know going etc.) then hard to say.  I'm in that blurry middle ground where in a  reasonably small race I usually place but in a large  race not so much.   So while a certificate (I am assuming you mean like a gift certificate or money type thing) might be nice, if it got too nice the race would get too big for me to have a shot.  But shirts are rarely a deciding factor.

              2) road for sure

3a)  yes, dont really care - they are nice but I can live without

3b) I'd rather have tech over cotton, but what I really prefer are races that make the purchase of a shirt optional for an additional cost.  I dont need THAT many shirts and really appreciate the lower fee above all else.   That being said, I dont choose my races based on the ammenities.

                  1) I prefer to run races that offer options for not getting a race t-shirt.  I email race directors ahead of time and usually they knock off $5 if you decide not to take the shirt.  I would rather go to a race that gave awards for top 3 rather than participation.  I would go to the race that has a reputation for better competition unless I really enjoyed one course over another.

                  2) grass

3A) More likely to run in a race that awards the top 3 because there will probably be better competition.
3B) If I had to get a shirt, I would like a technical shirt

                      Relax, Relax, Relax

                        1. Other -- the one with a proven record of bringing out faster runners and/or the race that starts earlier.

                        2. Road

                        3. A. Offering age group awards would is a plus (so...'more likely')

                            B. It depends on the design of the shirt (and type of cotton), but I would more than likely choose the race that offered the technical shirt.

                        rlemert

                          1) other - when it starts, expected amenities, race history and/or reputation

                          2) If the grass is typical lawn/soccer-field length then for sure the road. A nice thick lawn really slows you down.

If the grass is typical winter dormant and beaten down, then maybe the grass.

                          3) A - no preference - age group awards are almost irrelevent for me unless I cherry-pick my race

B - probably no preference - I don't really care all that much for technical shirts and don't mind cotton, so it would probably come down to the design.

1)...   c) at that point it would be down to if someone I know is running it.

                            2)...   a) Race X (grass)

                            3) A.... just as likely
                            3)B... more likely

                            http://htwins.net/scale2/scale2.swf?bordercolor=white&fb_source=message

                              1 - a - Age group award

                              2 - b - Road

3 - a - more likely due to age group awards

3 - b - more likely due to technical shirt

                                1.  c - Other.  It would be determined mainly on the courses themselves and whether I felt I could pull off a PR on one course versus the other.

                                2.  b - I dont like running on grass - I prefer the flat roads.

3  the prizes wouldnt matter that much to me because if they are offering cash prizes then that usually means there will be a lot of better runners, so while this does mean I have some faster people to pace off of, it usually leaves me out of contention for any prize in my AG

I would definitely choose the tech shirt over the cotton one

                                Good luck with your project
