Worst drive of my life, across Texas in the summer when the speed limit was 55 and a trooper lurked behind every mesquite tree. It took about a month, IIRC. At least we had satellite radio. Oh wait, no we didn't. We had AM radio. Arrgghhhh.... Tongue

I grew up in El Paso and went to college in Austin - I've done that drive so many times I can't count. Back when I first used to drive it it was 55MPH and I-10 wasn't quite done. You had to go right through Van Horn and Fort Stockton. That was literally a 12 or 13 hour drive. Anyone ever take a detour over to Balmoreah state park? That is, bar none, the best swimming pool of all time. It is spring fed, cold water (maybe 72 or 73 deg) at all times. Very deep with a nice medium-high dive and best of all there's never anyone there. Out in the middle of nowhere. So you'll pretty much have this massive pool to yourselves. It's hard to describe it - if you go there in the middle of summer it'll be like an oasis out in the desert. It's about 40 miles off of I-10 and well worth the trip. There's even little cabins you can rent and stay the night.

I will be out there in a couple weeks for camp with my son's Scout troop. Some of them will be taking scuba classes at Balmoreah.

i ran the austin marathon this year. It was my first marathon, and I was just looking to complete it. It was a lot of fun, the hills were okay, just pace yourself and you will be fine. Even in Houston they manage to find what few hills there are highway bridges, and over under passes, etc. might as well just run the Austin marathon.

Thanks for the input. Depending on how my half goes in September, I will consider signing up for Austin.
