Joan and I are both a year older today. Happy Birthday Joan! Joan is (as far as I know) in Freeport Maine, the home of my Father-in-law's favorite store, LL Bean. I'm in Central Islip, and having taken my last final exam, I will soon go home.

When I was a child I was fascinated by the hands of old people. My grandparents had these gnarled and bumpy fingers, and I always wondered how and when their hands started to get this way.

Recently I've noticed that I have developed this big lump on my wrist, near the vein. Maybe a ganglion cyst (sorry about the spelling). My wife has offered to hit it with a bible. A few days ago I noticed that I had a lump on my thumb, near where it joins the hand and over the bone. so I guess I'm developing Grandpa hands! I wonder when the liver spots come.

The other half of my toenail is still hanging in there although it looks like another nail is growing in underneath.
I'm condemned by a society that demands success when all I can offer is failure.

Yep, Joanie still lives in Freeport. You can see her running around in Freeport and Portland all the time (although I'll admit I haven't seen her around for about a month or so - whether that's because I'm in town less or she is taking a little rest after the trials I don't know...)

She's very nice - signed Beach to Beacon bibs for me and my son. She wrote, "Congratulations on your first 10k" for me, and "Congratulations on a fast race," for my son. I see her a lot, too - I still do a double take, though!
