2013 Sub-3:30 Marathon Goal Thread (Read 1381 times)

Some have only dreamed of going under 3:30, some pretty much live there but embrace the struggle to remain.  It's time for folks to plan their 2013 assaults on the 3:30 "barrier".

We are here to support each other in this shared goal.  Welcome and please tell us a little about yourself.  I'm Clive -- a long year of good training saw me go from 3:37 in 2010 to 3:18 in NOV2012.  I'm also one of the many people inspired by those striving so publicly to achieve their goals.

So post your target race(s); chat about training, races, and tweaking; and be sure to follow up with your results, good or bad!  (FWIW, the format used here is: [runner] – [date] – [race (location)] – [goal]  RESULT = _____.)

The original idea for this thread can be found HERE.

FWIW, a few 3:30 hopefuls have started up a 3:30 discussion in the MarathonRaceTraining user group.

Cool.  I'd gotten a PM that a few of them were waiting for this thread in the open forum, so I launched it.  If it turns out that the sub-3:30 talk stays in that group, I guess this thing will just wither and die. Smile

That be me, but looks like we jumped gun. I'm fine with either place just as long as us sub330ers have a home somewhere here. That said put me down for Philly 11/16 for now as still deciding on Philly or Steamtown.

Hi!  I'm hoping to break 3:30 this March.  So....

Thanks for taking this on again Clive.

                  I'm in.

Pretty damn close last year with a 3:30:54, but close only counts in... well, not in race goals.

                  [JenRosie] – [4/15/13] – [Boston Marathon] – [3:20ish]

And I'm cool with here, or MRT, or whatever group.

Count me in! I will once again be going for 3:15. I'm signed up for the Edinburgh Marathon on the 26th May, which I also did this year. Last time I was on pace until about 32km but then faded badly to end up with 3:22. My excuse - we always have one Smile - was that it was a *really* hot, sunny day.

Since it's a long way off I might revise my target  closer to the time, although 3:15 is important because it's the London "Good for Age" time for me - allowing entry to London without going through the ballot.

My PB is 3:21 from Amsterdam in 2010.

I'm in!  (The theme from Welcome Back, Kotter is playing in my head).  Put me down for Rock 'n Roll USA on March 16th in Washington, D.C.  No time goal right now.  I'm just going to hope the race is run and the weather is nice.

I'm doing a modified Pfitz 18/80.  I took a few weeks after NYCM was cancelled to recover from that training and get over my disappointment.  Then, I got hit with the stomach flu and didn't want to push things too hard.  But, I'm on the mend now and feeling great.

Julia - good luck with RnR USA. I ran it last year. As is the case with any RnR race, definitely catered to the half marathoner especially when you see 1000s of runners split off to finish and you're still running at Mile 13. Not bad race, but kinda desolate last 5-6 miles around the Anacostia. They changed course to start at Mall for 2013 opposed to RFK. RFK is much better imo. The Mall will be a logistical nightmare. Very unseasonable weather last year.

Thanks!  My first two marathons were National (pre-RNR) so I'm pretty familiar with the loneliness of the back half since that part has remained unchanged.  But, yeah, I'm a little worried about the course change for the half and the start.  I think that climb up Rock Creek Park is going to be painful.  And, I got used to hanging out in the Armory before the race to stay warm.  But, I'm looking forward to it.  After the disappointing year I've had, it'll be a sort of homecoming for me, so I'm already feeling sentimental about it.

That's true.  The climb up to Adams Morgan was never exactly a joy ride...  I know RnR gets a bum rap - and from what I gather rightfully so - but I did the half this year and thought it was an improvement.  This race wasn't exactly a well oiled machine before RNR took over.  In 2010, there was a parking fiasco that led to a large number of runners missing the start and slow runners being in the first corral; and in 2011, I think they changed the course on us last minute and on race day there weren't mile markers for the first 6 miles or so.  Definitely not the race to run if you can't roll with the punches.

I know, right?  I live a couple blocks from there, and run that section of the path 5 times a week.  That sharp hill at that point in the race is going to be interesting --- even people running fast will slow way down and I wonder if there will be a bottleneck.  I have to psych myself up not to walk toward the top of that hill when I get to it at the end of a hard run, and it takes me a while to get back on pace after I get to the top.  Last year the climb up Connecticut to Adams Morgan was uphill, but it was more gradual.
