Boomer, not to hijack the thread, but I often wondered who he was aiming for as well. Someone thought he'd actually just recognized me from my work.
More important than retribution to me is the Constitution, however. I wouldn't wish vigilante justice on him, although I understand the emotion behind it.

Yeah I am a big time fan of the Constitution and would not wish vigilanty justice back into our society but personally I really wish they would tighten up the laws when it comes to crimes of this nature. We should not as a society be made to fear living. I miss the days when a kid could go outside at 8 in the morning and not come home until he was hungry or it got dark.

When I run on pedestrain only pathes I might use my ipod. But I would never use them while running on the road. I want to hear anything and everybody.
A few months ago, Competitor magazine had a horrifying story about a woman being attacked during a run. I think it was prompted because a local girl (Chelsea?) was killed by a stalker during one of her runs.
The article had a few recommendations: don't run alone, don't run with earphones on both ears, plus a few other things. I still see a lot of women running by themselves in the area, and some with earphones on. They're not "asking for it", but after reading the article, I don't think they're not being as careful as they should be.
I had a much lesser incident one night. I was doing one of my runs, and it was dark. I was wearing a light on my forehead so I could be seen. There were two people in front of my that I was going to pass. They were both carrying skateboards. As I passed them, one of them yelled something as if to scare me. I just kept running happy that they chose not to use their skateboards as a weapon.

+1, but if you were my daughter somehow I think realism would overcome idealism.
About 11 years ago I was out for a run at 10:30pm in a college town...not a good one either, lots of crime (Ypsilanti, MI). I was hammering the end of a tempo run behind the stadium on a trail, scant lighting and not a soul for half a mile. Here's this co-ed out jogging, alone, at that time of night. I did a fake cough quite a-ways back, then again when I got very close. She had her earbuds in as it turned out, and although I passed as far away as possible on the trail she jumped out of her skin and started screaming at me for scaring her. I pointed out the time of day, the seclusion of the area, and indicated that I had tried TWICE to warn her that I was coming. Then I inquired what would have happened if I had been up to no good coming up behind her. From the look on her face I could tell she hadn't even thought of that before. <<shrug>>

I FIRMLY believe, scratch that ... I KNOW there are freaks everywhere. It is no joke. You need to do what you can to protect yourself. I always carry my phone & pepper spray and although I know I am still essentially "vulnerable" - at least I have a couple possible options. I also never run the same time, same route, on a regular basis - u gotta switch it up. I also do my best not to look exhausted during those runs when I am actually feeling that way - it just makes you look like an easy target. Maintain that posture & form that displays "I am full of piss & vinegar and I will pull a sub 4 if your unstable ass even THINKS about messing with me". If all else fails - make eye contact & start talking & yelling to yourself like a scene from the EXORCIST - chances are, even a crazy ass person won't want to deal with A CRAZY ASS person! I can't say my tips will "work" but hey, better to have a few strategies and plans vs. being a sitting duck. People need to get the proper psych meds or move to some island called "I'm a crazy ass and can't live on the mainland ISLAND" Stay safe!
Man, we had a woman attacked last night in my community while out jogging. 7:30 at night, still light out, and a guy grabs her from behind, throws her down and starts choking her. Luckily she got away. I didn't realize but this is the second incident in the last month where a woman jogging was attacked and choked. People suck.
Kunland - Stones River greenway, near McGavock High School. I run Shelby Bottoms several times a week, and Percy Priest to Kohl's area alot.
I'm sorry if this has been said already but I hope you filed a police report - if for no other reason then to let the cops know they have a perv on the lose. They will most likely keep their eyes open for the green truck. Please be safe.

Great. I mostly do Kohl's to the dam b/c it's more populated and shaded but the greenways do scare me a little. But I have always comforted myself in thinking there had never been any attacks out there.
running mom3 - any updates on your creepy creeperton?
I have startled people (men and women) who weren't paying attention a number of times despite trying to warn them. Every time it happens I wonder how long it will be before I get maced. I guess I can take comfort in the probability that someone who isn't paying attention to his or her surroundings probably hasn't thought ahead to bring mace.
Sorry, got here late to the party.
I was attacked while on a run in a forested area (outside of Portland OR) when I was 16. It was a knock-down, drag-out fight and I credit my ear piercing screams for my release before anything horrible happened to me.
But anyway. I NEVER run alone with earphones. Being alert to all sounds is important.
I carry pepper spray on a handy palm-thingie so I don't actually have to grip it. I carry the pepper spray and a phone (in a waistpack) when I'm in dodgy territory.
/tangent/ A couple of years ago I read a US State Dept handout on "Protecting Yourself When Overseas" or something like that. It had all sorts of handy suggestions for staying safe and out of trouble. I'll never forget the last line, however, which was something like, "If these measures fail and your life is in extreme danger, fight with every fiber of your being."
