Just got this link from a friend, I sent it to my wife who is a dietitian and I'm waiting for her response.

    Better I Leave

Two slices of white bread will cause a greater insulin spike than a whole Snickers bar. I went wheat/gluten free for about 6 months and got leaner than I ever have been. Today's wheat, from a genetics perspective, is a far cry from the wheat of just 60-100 years ago. Nowadays I still eat wheat but very minimally.

        Your crossfit/paleo friends are trendy.

I love wheat.  Bread.  Tortillas.  Wheat beer from time to time.

Sorry, that's all I can think when I read your posts, OP.

I think that there are certain foods that will work well for some people, and certain foods that will not work well for some people.  Lots of people have troubles digesting wheat, and others thrive on it.  Some people purposely include a lot of wheat or eat no wheat as part of their diet and hope to achieve certain goals.  It's up to you.  Just make sure you include a variety of healthy foods and pay attention to how your body reacts to them.  How's that for a vague answer.

                Potatoes!

One a more serious note, one of my friends who is a registered dietitian and head of a local celiac support group sent me this article about the Wheat Belly stuff.

It goes through some of the claims of the book, one by one, in a clear and cogent fashion

When I was in HS and College, that was a true statement for me.  Now approaching 50, and running more mileage now than ever before and I could easily gain weight or be less healthy if I don't try to eat healthy   I don't think running is an excuse to have a poor diet, especially as we age.

Fwiw I do eat wheat products (and when I was young and helping my dad farm, I used to eat wheat from the wagon in the field right after it was harvested -- talk about fresh, excluding the bugs!!), but all this GMO stuff and the increasing number of people that have problems with gluten, and or the number of people being allergic to a whole host of foods, does make me wonder what's going on with the food supply.

I love wheat. I would hate to have to do without it.

But I do try to vary my sources of carbs/grains, and not just eat bagel for breakfast, sandwich for lunch, pasta for supper. For breakfasts I also have oatmeal porridge or Red River Cereal (porridge made with cracked rye, wheat, and flax) or homemade granola. And there's a bakery here that makes an "ancient grains" bread that I simply love love love. And also of course I eat lots of rice, as well as occasionally things like quinoa or buckwheat/kasha.

I drink my wheat in the form of beer. Is good.

I figure people have been eating wheat for thousands of years, and I'm not sure it's changed all that much in the last few years despite the claims by the Wheat Belly guy.

"A wide variety of lightly processed foods" is still sound advice.

I do better with less wheat  some of it is just less carbs.  I dont do "gluten free" substitutes so if I avoid wheat I am basically just carb cutting.  Some of it is since I dont make fake wheat stuff I eat less of what goes on top of it.

But I will not go 100% gluten free again.  (I did for a little bit just to experiment - not impressed).  I keep seeing people on these complete elimination diets (wheat or dairy or egg or soy or all of the above)  become SO sensitized that one bite of the offending substance and they are in agony.  And they use this as proof that they are allergic to it "and I just didnt know how sick I was until I gave it up"  and "I must have been this sick all the time before and just didnt realize it"    Really?  One bite now and you are on the toilet for 24 hours  - you didnt notice that before?

I am more and more convinced that total elimination of a food (that you are not actually ALLERGIC) to makes you MORE SENSITIVE.

Case in point: grew up on a farm with both cats and hay. Exposed day in & day out for the first 18 years of my life. Went away to college for 4 years, and each time I came back, my reaction was worse and worse each visit. Now I am highly sensitive to both and can't be around either very long without the misery of allergic sneezing and stuffiness.

Same thing happened when I was pg with my youngest son, for some reason anything dairy made me nauseous so for 9 months, no dairy. After he was born, even a tiny bit of dairy made me miserable with gas and bloating. The digestive bacteria that is in our system to digest and breakdown dairy had long since stopped being fed and died, so my body had no idea how to digest the lactase in it. I had effectively made myself lactose intolerant! I read up on it(because life without ice cream or cream cheese just isn't worth living!) and there are bacteria pills that have the cultures like yogurt has naturally that reintroduce the bacteria your gut needs to process the lactase. It took about 6 months before my system could digest dairy like it had before my pg.

I think our body is great at dealing with variety, until we no longer vary things. Your body can't digest stuff right if you allow the digestive junk that helps break it down, die. So yes, then the next time you even catch a whiff of wheat, it ain't pretty! You may have been sensitive before, now you are off the charts!
