Recommend me some sunglasses! (Read 245 times)

Gotta question for you running w/sunglasses people:

How do they stay on your face/nose?  Do you use a strap around the back of yer head.  I wear contacts almost exclusively, and rue the days I have to wear glasses when running, as I get so frustrated with the sweat + glasses factor, I land up taking them off and run blind instead.

and Yet.... as i'm turning into an old woman who is increasingly upping my SPF game, sunglasses are becoming more of a need rather than an unnecessary accessory

FatSweatyBullDog and cliveF, I've been eyeballing (so to speak) Tifosi for awhile.  Do you happen to have on-hand the name of the model that comes with the polarized lenses?

HERE.  I have the Dolomite 1.0; they stay put on my face, even at track and 5k racing speeds.

I wear Oakley. I bought in the $80 range when they were on sale. They stay on just Fine during a run/race. I've worn sun glasses whenever I'm outdoors ever since I had PRK eye surgery (similar to LASIK). The doctor recommended that I wear sunglasses for a year after surgery when outdoors to prevent damage to the eyes. But in general, I think cataracts can be a problem as you age if you don't protect your eyes.

Might be the blind leading the blind here (again, so to speak), but I believe the idea is the nose piece of quality running sunglasses are made with, or are coated with, a  "hydrophobic" substance, which my limited knowledge of etymology tells me would repel moisture and thus, keep them on your face better.  That, and I bet most shades are going to be much lighter than your glasses, which would help keep them from sliding down your nose.  'Course, you'd need prescription sunglasses, but I bet they'd still be lighter than your regular glasses.

MTA: My mistake...they often have "hydrophilic" nose and ear pieces.  "Water-loving."  They react with the moisture to increase grip.

cliveF - There's...there's a model of sunglasses called "Dolemite?!??"  SOLD!!

I've been running and racing all distances up through marathon the last ten years wearing cheap, cool looking AOS safety glases with 100 UV safety lenses that I get for around $8.95 from Sherwin Wiliams paint stores, and similar ones from Home Depot/Lowes/Auto Zone.

They work just fine, and if you lose them, you're not depressed for having lost an $80 pair of sunglases.

And since they are safety glasses, I mow, edge, weedeat, drill, etc. wearing them.

Save yourself some money and try them before you spend a lot of money on some more expensive brand.

Sorry, can't seem to add the hyperlink with my phone any more. But which version from the link above are you saying that are polarized? Looked through all of them, and I think I found some with UV protection. Thanks.

I was running last week and picked up a pair of sunglasses off the side of the road.  They are great.  They were lost by a Pike electric worker who was working after the storm.  GS-S Z87+ is all I can find on frames.  Don't know who makes them.

Z87 is the safety standard 'safety' glasses have to conform to.

I have Ryder sunglasses which I really like.

+1 to Ryders.  Pretty inexpensive, lightweight, and they have styles with vented lenses.

Oakley Radars.  Best running sunglasses, hands down.

Since I usually end up breaking or losing my running sunglasses...I go cheap.  Latest pair at one of the dollar store chains - $6 Foster Grants.  Look like racing/running glasses w/o the price and so light that I barely notice they are there.  Never had problem with them falling off but then I do rinse/wash them under tap water when salt/sweat covered.

I highly recommend Oakley's. I have the Flak Jacket 2.0, what's neat about them (and any Oakley's) is that the store will adjust them to your face. And you can get interchangeable lenses. I have ones for Sunny days, clear ones for cycling in the morning, and yellow tinted ones for running trails..

Thinking about picking up a new pair with money Santa left in my stocking.  Got about $125 to spend.  Considerations:

                            1.  I like polarized, but could probably do without it.

                            2.  I probably wouldn't wear them running.  My eyes get too sweaty, and I'd have to keep taking them off to wipe it away.  But I would like sunglasses that would be good for running because a) I know they'll be lightweight and semi-durable, and b) who knows, I might want to wear them on a run sometime, after all.

                            3.  I'd like some effort at a scratch-resistant coating.  I'm very proud of myself in that I've kept track of my current cheapo pair for about seven years - that's why I'm trusting myself with the prospect of buying a nicer pair - but I would like some defense against the occasional brush against shirt buttons, etc., as the current pair haven't fared so well in this regard.

I have 2 pairs of Natives. Love them- they don't slide and are vented so they don't fog up. Got them on www.sierratradingpost.com for a steep discount.
