Getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to
remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air.

The EPA AirNow website (http://airnow.gov/) has a dummy-proof color coded system to alert people when it's unhealthy to exercise outside. You can see that right now many parts of LA are coded red - unhealthy because of high PM10 (particulate matter) concentrations. If you go running outside in one of those areas, you'll probably do more harm than good (just my opinion, but it's what I study for a living...if you can call it that). I'd stick to the treadmill until the levels go down.

"To obtain the air that angels breathe you must come to Tahoe"--Mark Twain
"The most common question from potential entrants is 'I do not know if I can do this' to which I usually answer, 'that's the whole point'.--Paul Charteris, Tarawera Ultramarathon RD.
