I've had a problem with the Garmin (405) the last two nights I've gone out for a run. I run for a few minutes, look down, and it thinks I've gone an entire mile. I lock the bezel every time I go out, so I don't think I'm hitting anything that would make it do this, and when I look at the maps here on RunningAhead, they show an outlying point way off route (last night's was in the middle of a neighboring golf course). Any ideas? After the first mile it seems to behave.
I tried to do a Google search on this but came up empty...maybe I'm just not searching on the right terms. It's probably a week from being a year old, so if it's defective, I guess now's the time to figure that out.
Upcoming plans:
Tahoe Rim Trail 50 M (July 16)
Hot To Trot (August)
Woods Ferry 24 Hour (Labor Day weekend)
Georgia Jewel 50 M (Sept 24)
Pinhoti 100 (November 5)

My running partners like to mock me when I'm standing around locating the satellites before our run. I'll try waiting an extra second or so before I press the button and start running to see if that helps. Thanks!

I always set my Garmin outside, turn it on, and let it find the mother ship while I get dressed for the run. It's always ready to go when I am.

Run until the trail runs out.

Works better when it's south-facing.
Do not attempt.

+1. If it's been awhile since you used it, or you've traveled, it takes longer to acquire.
The more satellites the watch sees, the more accurate it will be. At first it only has the minimum number of satellites and accuracy isn't too good, especially around tall buildings, trees, or mountains. After awhile it has (up to) 20 satellites and it's very accurate. Check out your elevation graph for that first mile--it looks like you fell down a mineshaft!

I usually drive to my runs, so letting it sit in the window while I get ready won't usually work for me, but as long as it fixes the issue, I'm ok with giving it extra time once I arrive.
That's perfect--you can set it on the dashboard while you drive and it will be ready to go when you get there. Touch "training" and let it find the sats.
