Wow, it sounds like you are doing pretty well already! That is awesome Smile I would hope in a couple of weeks you're doing even better, but I just can't imagine you would be ready to do a whole lot even then...

I went to a race Saturday night that I had signed up to run a few months back with a friend. Since I couldn't run it, she got another friend to take my bib and run it for me. Several people from my running club were also there running the race. It was so nice--sunny and in the 50's. Even though I couldn't run it, it was sooooo amazing just being there cheering my friends on, and being outside in such nice weather.

This morning I'm planning to call the doctor's office and see if I can get an update about the insurance coverage for the surgery. I had a dream last night that insurance came back and said they wouldn't cover it and then the doc gave me a quote of $65,000. I really hope that's not how it goes down--lol.

I'm not sure why that posted above. I was reading through the forums as my son is recovering from his second surgery.  He is 18 and had cam lesions and labral tears in both hips.  After a year and a half of being told that is was "growing pains", I ran into a triathlete friend of mine who had just had the surgery. She referred us to her to her surgeon and we went from there.  Our entire family runs so it has been really tough for him.  He was a cross country and track distance runner.  The right hip was done last June and recovery went very smoothly.  He was back to easy runs at 12 weeks and even ran in his conference meet 15 weeks post op.  Predictably, the left hip started hurting more (we were expecting this based on his x-rays and scans). The left was repaired 3/19.  Recovery was going well but he insisted on going back to school today--POD 11.(18 year olds are hard to reason with).  He is now hurting some and I am terrrifed he will get tendonitis.  Any advice?  Maybe he will listen to those of you who have been through this,  Thanks!

I didn't have issue with scar tissue but there were a few times where I had broken up some tissue (supposedly) and it felt like a wicked painful cracking in the joint.     I did notice a dramatic improvement in my range of motion after I started going back to my massage therapist (about 3 weeks post-op) so maybe that would help some?

I mentioned this to him.  He said he was going to talk to his physical therapist to see if that was an option.  Thanks!

I have read that some people have to have revisions to remove the scar tissue. I am totally terrified of it. lol

I didn't even know this happens. Yikes.  I will try not to mention this to him.  He worries enough as is about his hip.

Shu, I was just thinking about your husband the other day.  How is he doing overall?

My ROM is not perfect in my operated hip, but it doesn't seem to affect me in anything I want to do.  Oddly enough, I notice it most when I am shaving my legs and can't bend my knee as far inward as I used to.  Like Oski, during the healing process I felt scar tissue break up once or twice and it was kind of scary.  My PT stressed that ROM stuff was really important to keep up on.  I think some sort of manual stimulation could really help (massage therapist, ART, Graston, etc.)

            Running is dumb.

He is doing mostly okay.  His hip still hurts pretty good if he walks around too much during the day.  Also, if he spends too much time bending at the hip.  He was picking up sticks in the yard this weekend when I went out for a run, and that night his hip hurt quite a bit.  He is seeing his PT today, so I think he's going to see if she has any recommendations as far as massage therapy for the scar tissue.  Thanks for checking in. I'm about 6 weeks now and seem to be doing mostly okay. My daughter had opening day for softball on Saturday which involved standing, sitting on bleachers, and walking and I was pretty sore the rest of the day. Better today. I'm waiting for my work to accommodate the restrictions my doctor has placed on me before I go back, hopefully this week. Not that I'm complaining, I have had plenty of time to do homework in my "spare" time. I am doing 20 minutes on the stationary bike at a time, no resistance still (I'm going to add a teeny bit this week and see how it goes). Therapy at the moment consists of core work, which is boring as heck. I am chomping at the bit here. lol

ok so a few months ago i had an mri without contrast and it showed i had a .8 cm deepening of the anterior femoral accetabular-labrum sulcus compatible with a partial thickness tear.  i am getting another mri with contrast friday.  I was just wondering if surgery if recommended with partial tears, or if anyone has had something similar.

A partial tear is a tear all the same. The labrum does not heal on its own, so surgery is recommended, particularly to address what caused the tear. Have you had xrays, and if so, were they able to note a CAM or pincer impingement? Have you found a specialist in your area that deals with labral tears?

The two tears seen on my MRI were "small" but like stfuandrun said, surgery in 2 weeks will address the CAM impingement as well as the tears. The only way to fix those is surgery since there is no blood supply to the area. And from what I've read, the longer you go with a compromised labrum, the quicker osteoarthritis forms and the sooner a full hip replacement is needed.

I can't wait to get this surgery over with since the pain just keeps increasing--and the other hip seems to be going downhill fast. But I still don't have resolution with insurance to cover it (and my surgeon's office staff is not very communicative), so I'm anticipating the bills in a few months. Good thing I have a job that I can work from home with after surgery for a while Smile

You are getting close, though! I am excited for you. I had to wait about a month once I saw the specialist and I was going crazy, the pain got worse every day. But I woke up from surgery and had no preop pain! I still don't! Every once in a while I get a little pain, but it's nothing compared to preop pain.

Interesting how different protocols are.  I was getting my ass kicked in PT as soon as I was off the crutches!

Yes, a tear is a tear - partial is what most of us have.

I'm not going to lie, I'm a little irritated with how conservative the therapy is right now. I'm trying to be patient, but it seems like others are doing so much more than I am. I have been doing hip exercises and core exercises since about week 2 and riding the bike since the end of week 1, though. Still frustrating.

OK, I must have issues with easily getting hurt lately. Somehow, using a crutch (because if I'm on my feet a lot right now, the pain gets worse) over the weekend, I tweaked my wrist (the one I would have to use at all times after surgery, being on the opposite side of my bad hip). Now I'm freaking out because I can't do much with that wrist without pain Sad I'm not sure how I'm going to get around after surgery if that wrist is out of commission :O But I guess that goes along with somehow tearing my labrum while in PT for my knee after surgery in November Sad

I can't remember if you mentioned this already - but have you been diagnosed with any of the hypermobility syndromes?   It will certainly cause a lot of random joint issues.   Both my rheumatologist and my ortho noted my hypermobility but I haven't attempted to get the formal testing for things like Ehlers-Danlos, etc.    But I certainly have all the classic symptoms, including the ability to get injured by seemingly nothing!
