I think the takeaway may be that there are a variety of individual factors that come into play: How much liquid you personally need - LOTS How far you go - varies How hot and humid the environment is - VERY How comfortable you are with bouncing or chafing on waist, or back - Not at all How much you worry about your appearance - Kind of a lot Whether you have convenient water fountain alternatives you can use, or are looping past a point where you can stash water - Nope

Looks like I'm S.O.L.! I need to map out a new route where I run around a Quickie Mart. I think I'll start carrying a Big Gulp and go from there.
I don't half-ass anything
"I have several close friends who have run marathons, a word that is actually derived from two Swahili words: mara, which means 'to die a horrible death' and thon, which means 'for a stupid T-shirt.' Look it up." - Celia Rivenbark, You Can't Drink All Day if You Don't Start in the Morning
I like a fuel belt on runs over 6 miles. I tend to appreciate more fluids on a run.
As for gels, I usually carry one on runs over 10 miles, but don't always take one until distances over 13-14.
I am a heavy sweater, but my break point is usually @ 90 minutes. If I am running under 90 minutes I will usually go without a camelback.

2012 Goals ~ Mar < 3:00 2:56:07, 1/2M < 1:25, 50k < 5 hours 3:44:20, 24 hour > 145 miles
in past have normally used the REI double shot fuel belt for anything over 10 miles. recently have been training myself to start slowly extending my runs again w/o water/fuel (but always drink water 30-60 mns before & sometimes use a gel beforehand) but hydrate before & immediately after as well as eat within 30 mns after run. LR back up to 13-13.5 now. when I get up to 15 and/or weather begins to heat up more will most likely start using fuel belt again. starting to look at camelbacks for trail running in lower elevations of Cascades so that I can take extra light weight clothes/water/food/first aid.
Decker Challenge 12/12
I'm surprised no one mentioned time as a factor in when water & fuel might be needed. For me I've found I can do 45-60 min just about all year without hydration. For me that's 4-4 1/2, rarely 5 mi depending on how its going (which lately would be closer to 4... but that's another post). Beyond that I'll need to hydrate. Somewhere between 90-120 min I'll need fuel as well, especially in the warmer weather.
MTA: the two posts above snuck in while I was typing! LOL
bob e v 2012 goals: keep on running! Is there anything more than that?
Finish 2 halves, 3M Half 1/29 and probably Decker Challenge in Dechistory: blessed heart attack 3/15/2008; c25k july 2008 first 5k 10/26/2008, 62nd birthday; 1st 10k 2/28/2009 - 50 wks from heart attack to 10k; 1st Half Marathon 11/9/09 20 months from heart attack! !
I drink water after about 80 minutes, but for me fuel isn't necessary unless the run is 3+ hours (not the same all out race effort though). Once you get used to not fueling so often, fueling when you race or during long marathon pace runs is icing on the cake...
2012 Goals: Run more trails.
What does Tunis make?
I don't generally bother with fuel or liquid in the winter, but I surely hope I'll be remembering to drink before we hit hot weather (say, 95F/35C). I don't tend to eat anything ever in training, muchly due to lack of brains to think of it.
It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

I'll bet you were pretty hungry on the first day of spring.
It's not the heat, it's the stupidity.
When it’s all said and done, will you have said more than you’ve done?

that is kind of my thinking right now, although do not fuel during race unless HM or longer. temp. is always a factor. right now in W.WA temps remain below norm & much wetter for this time of year (March is going down as one of the wettest March ever).
