Is anyone aware of a run/walk calculator that will help me establish a decent pace for an upcoming half marathon?

    I've got a fever...

Is anyone aware of a run/walk calculator that will help me establish a decent pace for an upcoming half marathon?
There's a pace calculator on this site. Not sure if that's what you're looking for. Cheers, Jeff

On your deathbed, you won't wish that you'd spent more time at the office.  But you will wish that you'd spent more time running.  Because if you had, you wouldn't be on your deathbed.

Thanks Jeff, what I'm actually looking for is some way to help me calculate half marathon results if I run for two minute intervals at say a 10 minute/mile pace then 1 minute of walking at a 15 minute/mile pace on a consistent basis for the half.

This combination of running and walking would yield an average pace of 11:15 minutes/mile. Using the Race Time Predictor found here you can see what your predicted half marathon time would be, given various distances that you can currently maintain at this pace. For example, if you have recently completed 1 mile at an 11:15 pace, then the calculator predicts that you could do the half in 2:51:59. However, if you have recently been able to complete 5 miles at 11:15 pace, then the predictor says 2:36:09. Play around with it using your known results.

When it’s all said and done, will you have said more than you’ve done?

            Thanks so much.

I would say that you average closer to 11:40 per mile. (10+10+15/3) which for 13.1 miles gives you 2:32:50. Maybe my math is off, though. Warning - it will be very difficult to make yourself run after one minute of walking, especially towards the end! I think a run 10 walk 5 may be easier to keep up. Play around with it on your long runs and see what works for you.
Hi Abbaroodle, I understand what you are saying about it being difficult to start running again after only walking a minute and yes I am going to tweaking this concept out on some longer runs over the next week or so. I ran with some folks in our local club for the first time earlier this week and did 5 miles with them and overall my heart rate stayed much lower than it does when I run on my own. This type of running is new to me but this group has told me that when I can get the run/walk interval right that is best for me that I will see an improvement in my race times. I'll keep you posted here as to how my longer runs go using this style of running.

Well this afternoon I tried a 5 mile run, actually ran a bit more than 5 miles. I did the entire run at a run/walk interval of 2 minutes running then 1 minute walking. For a 5 mile mile distance I improved my previous best time of 56:28 to 55:31, not quite a full minute. I'm happy with it though as a first attempt in changing my running strategy. It was pretty comfortable for the most part, there were a few intervals that were a struggle but I think the chilly wind contributed to the issues too. I'm hoping that one day this weekend I can push this out to a 10 mile or so run and see what the results are at that point.

aggiedad77-- I've used this run walk calculatorhttp://www.users.kih.net/~mewilliams/calc/ Is that what you're looking for? Good luck with your training!

Randy, I'm so glad that was helpful! I'm new to this running thing and am using the run/walk method myself, in fact that's how I got started. I'm not sure I'd still be doing it if I'd try running full out! I've also used this http://www.geocities.com/onanyes/galloweenie.html website. (Sorry! I don't know how to put links in here!) I started a "Run/Walk Training" group on RA, if you're interested in joining another forum. Right now there's just a couple of us there and not much activity, but I'm also interested in connecting with other run/walk folks! Have a good weekend! Carol

Yes Carol I would enjoy joining in with your run/walk forum....how do I find it? I'm fairly new here myself. Randy
