2010 Goal of Sub 4:00 Marathon (Read 3304 times)

Should have had that tip a few weeks ago - Ran in a vest and got BADLY burnt on the shoulders - My Irish skin just want expecting that!

Thanks for the welcome back, now just kick my butt at times to make sure I am doing what is needed!

OK, everyone, what's your weekly mileage?

      Resting? get a hug!!!

I am, and will be, in Argentina for most of this year, and plan on running my sub 4 here. At the moment, I have three marathons in my sights, the first being in Rosario in June, but I don't expect that one to be sub 4, more a testing ground to get the legs used to the distance again. I will also run a marathon in Uruguay in Early September as a long training run (it's at a beach resort, Punte de Este, so a good excuse for a weekend away), and the main target for the year will be the 10 10 10 Marathon here in Buenos Aires......   That's where I hope to drop under that magic number again.....

Enjoy Buenos Aires!!! I have great memories of running 20 miles in the "La Boca" area and then dancing tango all night long afterwards.

Punta del Este should be fun, a nice route for a fast course!!! Make sure the distance is 26.2 miles since people in S.A. tend to call marathon to any race longer than 3 miles (yeah...like a 10k marathon...I am dead serious here)

What are you doing in Bs. As? Enjoy la ciudad Bonaerense!!!

I am looking at a  sub 4 at Newport in June.......but then again...my youngest boy is graduating from high school the following week...so focusing on quality runs would be difficult with college applications and all. We shall see...

I have run 50-60 miles a week in the last three marathon cycles...but the sub 4 is still so elusive from me <sight> June will be my last attempt for a sub 4...then I am going back to more marathons and less time oriented...maybe I just don't have what it takes to run fast...but I sure can go long and often.

         Great thread Econo! Enjoy Yakima!!!!

"Dream big...then run hard toward those dreams!!!

Hey, I'm gonna jump in here, although I don't know why since I don't plan a sub 4.

Ok....maybe I do know why.  I secret wish for a sub 4 but I'm not ready for it just yet.  I do plan 4:15.....can I still play?  I mean that's so close to sub 4 ( OK, not really that close)

I'll be attempting this feat in late April in Oklahoma City.

I'm around 45 mpw right now and am just about at my peak of 50-mid 50s.  I have increased weekly mileage a bit from the last 2 training cycles and trying to increase pace at end of long runs.

          Good luck evryone.

          Quit being so damn serious!

When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change.

"Ya just gotta let it go." OM

Hey Econo!  I was just taking a trip down memory lane and ran across a paragraph in my 2007 Hartford Race Report (my first BQ).

Econo’s words from Friday night’s phone call rang in my head for a good bit of the race: “What are you gonna do if you see you’re running 9:05’s instead of 9:15’s?” So every time it looked like I was going too fast, I listened to her virtual scolding and slowed down. Except for mile 7 which I don’t even remember. It must have been mostly downhill or that split was a Garmin malfunction. Or I was invaded by aliens for that mile. Sorry Econo.

You helped me that day - and I thank you.  Best of luck in June!  You're ready to do this.

              Hi PDR!  (waving)

Well, no, I'm not at the point where I can do a sub-4 at Newport (June 5th), but if all continues well throughout summer training, I may be able to take a shot at it at Victoria in October.

Currently I'm running 40 mpw 3 weeks, then a cutback week of any mileage...so far so good for this marathon cycle.  Would love to see it improve to 60 mpw before I attempt a BQ.  mariposai, your mileage has always impressed me!

I am rethinking my goal of sub 4 at Grand father, after talking to a few people who have run it.  If I can run  a 9 min pace on another course, they suggested I plan on 9:30-9:40 pace for this one, so 4:10  it is if I run it at all.

My calf and knee have been bothering me a little this week, so maybe I'll cut back for a couple of weeks, but currently running around 40 MPW, and was hoping to get to 50-55 if I run that July marathon mainly by increasing the weekend long run and a longer midweek run, keeping all other runs the same, otherwise will keep at the 40-45 range until  a fall marathon attempt.

                No offense.

HF, when I was running 3:55-4:00 marathons, I ran Grandfather in 4:09... so that sounds about right.

                  Good luck.

                  Ultima tastes like failure.

2nd question -- what are your half marathon times looking like?

I just got done with the (hilly) Knoxville half marathon; 1:51:54.  OK then.

(I'm glad I did the half...the marathoners out there over 3:30 got pummelled by a fierce storm.)

I am somewhat undecided about this fall- I have only run halfs so far but if training goes well over the summer I may be tempted.

The marathon seems to hang there like a big unanswered question, a challenge, "So you say you are a runner but you never ran a marathon?" sort of thing.

Based on my time for the half I should be able to do it.

just jumping in here.  at this point not planning on running full, not sure if want to committ to the extra training effort but have been given it some thought recently.  ran my only full way back in 1981 !!   have a hm coming up may 2nd & if that goes well (survive, with no injuries) probably plan another hm in fall, & if that goes well (survive, no injuries) may go for it!!   goal would be sub 4 (so does that qualify me to post to this thread??).  Besides after Oct. I get another 10 minutes for BQ (3:45) !   My May HM will be longest race since 81 or 82.

Econo:  I see by your profile picture that you ran the Edge to Edge up in BC..  Just found out about it, can you tell me abit about it?

                          Welcome SimonR and skyedog

skyedog, regarding E2E, I ran only one portion of it, via the relay.  It's a gorgous course!  Love the scenery there on the far edge of Vancouver Is.  It's sure hard to get to, however; that's what's keeping me from going back and running the full.  There is some hillage.

                          No offense.

I stupidly thought about doubling edge-to-edge with a local ultra that's the day before.  Then I tried to figure out how to get there.  Yikes.  Even though as the crow flies, it ain't far from Seattle, it's easier for me to fly to Denver and drive to Estes Park if I wanna get my double on.  (which I probably won't after all)

                            Ultima tastes like failure.

the scenery, the beach, the water, & of course the difficulty of getting there are all reasons that I want to run it.  Probably would only do the HM, & do a little camping outing with the wife.  Have also wanted to see that area, lots of hiking, kayaking, bears  & apparently running too!  Something about the name Nanimo that intrigues me as well, as in Nanimo bars (the dessert, not the local drinking holes-don't drink).

                              I fly.

I'm in.  I've got to break 4 hours this year.  Maybe Vermont...

                                Bring it on.
