    Does your husky enjoy spam?

oh, dammit. i was hoping this was a real thread about running with dogs, because i can't find the right leash solution for my dog to run with me.

      I think spammers are dicks.

I've been running with our seven-month-old German Shepherd for a while now.  I use a regular leash with a regular collar, although I've used a pinch-collar in the past.  My goal is to teach her to run with me without worrying about equipment to force her to comply.  What issues are you having?

I have run with my Alaskan Malamute for years.  Most of the time, I just ran with her normal leash and collar (one that tightens when you pull on it).

Recently I found a belt that had an attachment for a leash with two fasteners -- one to the dog and one to the belt.  It also has a pouch to hold bags to pick up "stuff."  I like it.  I can't find a link to the one I bought, but it is something like this.

Before I found the belt, I just used the 6 foot lead and wrapped it around my waist so I didn't have to hold the lead in my hand.  Worked fine that way too.

I like a five foot leash, and I put a regular flat buckle collar on my dog.  Keeping a loose leash is something you need to train walking first, before you try running.  I don't find it to be a hardship to just hold the leash, and I actually prefer to have the control if it becomes necessary to hold him back for any reason (loose dogs, wildlife, strangers trying to approach me).  I have on occasion gotten lazy and clipped the leash handle to the chest strap of my hydration pack, but I think it could a safety issue.  I also prefer to hold the leash in my hand so if I fall on the ice or something, I can drop the leash and not yank my dog.  Or if he stops all of a sudden to relieve himself, I can drop the lead and not jerk him while he is trying to poop.

I thought this was going to be a thread along the lines of what MrFinn was suggesting.  LOVE that suit, by the way.

We are fragile creatures on collision with our judgment day.

I have a 115 lb Lab. I take him with me sometimes. With him, it's necessary to play actively for a few minutes before taking him....otherwise he's too excited to do well on the leash. I use a no-pull harness, Petco brand. He does well with this. Without it, he can easily pull me down if he gets excited about seeing someone/something.

I use a 6' leash DD uses 5'. You don't want too much slack.

Put dog on leash while you clean house. He will learn to anticapate your moves.

Thank you for all those awesome ideas, will definately try them out with him Smile

We have a 1 year old smooth coat border collie and while he is a lovely boy he is a teenage eejit at the moment.  I cant run with him as he pulls me too much and last time i persevered with it i ended up with shin problems as my running gait was all out of whack to compensate for him.  Ideally i would like to use a hands free leash.  I dont worry about him stopping for other distractions, as he loves to run, and will choose that over everything.  i cant even use treats to train him because he wont stop to eat if he has the chance to run!  We used to have a german shepherd and he was awesome to run with, so i know i can get there, but it takes time, and becomes a viscous circle - i cant run him so when he does get to go for a run, he misbehaves so then i cant run him etc)

So far we have tried a short leash, works ok but not fantastic for me, long leash (not sure the length but long enough for a gap between us) we have used a harness which worked ok until he ate it, a halti (goes around the nose, supposed to stop pulling but all it seemed to do was strengthen his neck muscles against it) and currently use a choke chain but it doesnt even faze him.

If he was anyone elses dog i would be all "that dog is hilariously awesome good luck with that" but it is not so funny when he is my boy lol.   The ironic part is we got him to be my running companion so i could venture into trails and things with a wingman, but alas, haven't even made it to one yet.

I am currently working with him in the backyard by holding the lead close to me, and whenever he pulls i change direction so he will eventually learn to wait for me and follow my direction.  Sometimes i think i am getting somewhere but most times we both end up a sweaty frustrated mess.

Thanks for any ideas you can give me!

I like the look of the one in your link, probably a bit more room than this one that i have been eyeing up Handsfree SPIleash but would it/does it bounce around when you run?

                              Loves the outdoors

We've recently gotten a second dog and he's sent me hunting for new dog-running solutions. He is still very young so is quite bouncy and easily distracted. He constantly changes sides and gets caught in my other dogs leash. I've discovered a simple leash that has clips on either end with some intermediate d-rings to hook on along the leash. This means I can make a largish loop and hook it diagonally over my should and under my arm. It's great for my older dog. He can run easily alongside me with no hands and I just run with my young dogs leash in my hand so I can correct him when necessary and keep him from tangling both dogs which always happens with two leashes in one hand.  I pull my older dogs leash off my body when I'm on anything too narrow with a fall hazard though.

the leash is kind of like this leash

One day I decided I wanted to become a runner, so I did.
