    Trent...

    I need your help. Sad

Every February/March I get sick, usually strep or virus that turns into bronchitis, IMO it is chronic. It typically takes me 4-6 weeks to get over it. This year I got a sort throat and fever so bad I could not get out of bed for four days, took two weeks off from exercise, but again this has turned into a bad cough/chest cold that won't go away. I can swim, and bike easy pretty comfortably but running seems to set me back. Tonight I ran and after 2 miles my chest hurt but it let up. I wasn't coughing, or having any troubles breathing, and I felt strong. I ran 8 miles easy. But when I stopped running I had a bad dry coughing spell and for two hours after I stopped running my chest felt tight and painful. I'm taking lequvin right now, saw a random doc Feb 16th, he gave me that and steroids, and see my doctor March 11th. So my question is would you run through this chest cold?

      Welcome to my life.

What kind/dosing of steroids?  What was the diagnosis?

I'm running somewhere tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful. I can't wait.

        You sick too? Sorry!

He rule out strep, and did a chest x-ray, ruled out pneumonia. He gave me presidone (been on it before), 3 pills for 5 days. It did help as I was coughing non stop and I was desperate to get back to work (as it really sucks to take two weeks of  time off for being ill every year). He thought it was a virus and gave me the antibiotic and said if in a week not feeling better to fill it. I started taking that on Friday. I just can't get rid of it out of my chest.  Even this morning after sleeping well, my chest feels sore. Would you call and ask for another dose of presidone?

A lot of these respiratory viral infections cause chest inflammation that mimics asthma and can take weeks and weeks to work their way out.  Prednisone 60 mg daily x 5 days is pretty good.  Sometimes you need albuterol puffers too.  Usually though, it just takes a lot of patience.  Also, FWIW, antibiotics are for bacterial infections, not viral ones.

Thanks Trent. Prescription of patience is just what I need. I ran 3 miles tonight, blew my nose good and felt great, not one cough afterward. I think I'll keep my miles from 3-5 easy for awhile, since my cough doesn't seem to flare up at this level.

I wish I knew why I tend to get sick this time of year, like no one else I know. My kids and husband were only very sick for a day, and are already over it.
