| I seem to have something of an unusual foot injury. Last week while running my usual 5 miles the outside edge of my left foot started to hurt around mile 3. I've checked out most of the online running injury stuff and all I can find specifically for feet is PF injuries and arch injuries but these don't really seem to fit my symptoms. My heel is fine, and it is the opposite side of my foot from the arch. Again it's just the outside edge of my foot. It gets better with rest but all last week if I was standing for any amount of time I could feel it. Has anybody had anything like this? I took the rest of the last week off and probably this week too and it seems like it is getting better but if it is still hurting next week I may just try to tape it or something. |

I have the same pain in the same area that you described. Usually, it occurs when my shoes have too many miles on them and are no longer giving me the proper support. After switching into a new pair, the pain usually goes away.
Last year, the pain wouldn't go away even with a new pair of shoes. I eventually went to a podiatrist and he concluded that although it is not a typical PF symptom, it is still PF. It turned out that I needed a new pair of orthotics. With new pair, the pain went away for good.

Huh...I have had that a few times after runs of more than 8-9 miles. Even in newer shoes. It always seems to go away after a day or so, so I chalked it up to my foot muscles just getting an extra tough workout from the distance.

| Maybe it is my shoes. I've been running on Asics for a while and switched to Muzino but they only have about 100 miles on them or so. Hopefully I can avoid the podiatrist but I guess I'll wait and see. How do the orthotics work? Are they just inserts or are they shoes? |

| You also need to go see a running shoe specialist (at a real shoe store run by runners) and have them watch your gait and look at your shoe wear pattern. |

| When I first starting running I went to a great running specialist store here in Austin (Runtex) and they got me squared away on my shoes. This is the first real problem I've had in the 2 years since I started with the exception of the usual shin splints which is why it was kind of throwing me for a loop. On the run where I noticed the pain it was my normal route and it was the first run after about 3 days rest. Not a hard run either, just out working on some easy base miles. |

| Your gait and running pattern may change over time and with experience. I get my gait checked with every new pair of shoes I buy. |

That's a good idea - I didn't realize that it could change. I'll get it checked out even if this injury ends up taking care of itself.
Thanks |

| I have been surprised at how the wear pattern has evolved. Sounds like a plan! |

I suspect that the pain you are having is cumulative. The Mizuno could be slightly different from the Asics such that every mile irritates your foot a little more. Why did you switch to Mizunos? If a shoe works, you should stick with it until they don't make them anymore.
Orthotics are inserts. They come in several varieties, from over the counter to custom made. They can cost as much as $400 a pair. They keep your feet in a certain position to fix any mechanical isses your foot might have. From what you described, the shoe is the likely culprit. Just because the shoe guy recommended them doesn't mean they're perfect for you. A different shoe might help your problem go away. |

| The reason I switched from the Asics was the last pair I bought started falling apart and wore huge blisters on my feet when they should have only been just getting broken in. Maybe I just got a bad pair but I had been looking at the Muzino's for a while and that seemed like a good time to switch. Trent had mentioned how my running may have changed since I began so I think I'm going to go back to Runtex and have them take another look at my feet and see what they recommend and start from there. I'm afraid that if I need $400 orthotics my sport of choice may become ping pong!! |

I have to say I love my Mizuno's but they sure don't have as much cushioning as a lot of other running shoes. Maybe that could be part of the problem? I'm on my third pair of Mizuno Wave Elixers and I'll probably always have a pair around but as my long runs have gotten over 10 miles, I'm thinking I'm going to need a pair with a little more cushioning while training for a fall full marathon.

Maybe I'll keep my Muzinos for shorter runs and get something else with more cushion for the longer ones.
