I wish you luck.

The economy sucks and the job market is worse. Unless you have specialized talents or connections, it will be tough to find work.

Welcome back. Roll eyes

Tom

Yes...running is my "job." Too bad the pay sucks. Tongue

Seriously, I've kind of given up looking for work. I have 2 worthless bachelor's degrees (English Lit. & Photography/Communications), have been out of work since DS was born 7.5+ years ago, and live in BFE (and with the housing market it's not as if we could even sell our house and move...DH is already commuting 30 minutes each way). The only jobs I can find are a half hour away and pay minimum wage (retail). With the price of gas it's not justifiable. Luckily DH makes enough for us to survive fine, but we don't really have any extra for things like much in the way of savings or family trips--things that even a small income on my end would help support.

Maybe there's more in the Detroit area (though I'm guessing not, with the "Big 3" being the primary industry)? The West side of the state is in pretty rough straits.

Anya, the good news is... there are A TON of houses for sale so, you'll likely be able to get a nice home for relatively cheap. Just don't try to sell it soon thereafter. Roll eyes

And, yes, Zoomy, the Detroit-area is just as bad job-market/economy-wise.

Great..... I going thru a divorce, and the housing costs here ( dc area ) are outrageous. My entire family is in the Detroit area ( northiville, royal oak, westland )

I do crappy insurance work. Like auto claims or sales. I know its probably a big mistake, but I simply can't afford an apt out here. God help me !

Indiana's job market seems ok and our housing is cheaper than Detroit...

The running trails in Northville and Rochester are much better than anything here though.
"Talent" is a cop-out for not wanting to try harder.

marathon - 2:28
HM - 1:09:53
10K - 30:57
5K - 15:18 (2nd half of above 10K)

You know, I'll bet the insurance industry is more stable than a lot of things. In your case I'd think you'd find work just fine. Smile

Soo...you gonna do any big races once you get here? You need to help us hijack threads once you move, too. Big grin

Zoomie, if I can ever get back to real running again, I will for sure. I've suddenly become the girl who can't run 5 miles without stopping. But, my sadness is turning into anger now that I'm realizing my f'n financial situation. Maybe that will give me back my strength!
Once I move back, I want to talk the fam into buying a cottage Up north. Love it up there !

Heh... I'm in the insurance industry as well Anya. I am a personal lines loss control rep for Grange Insurance. Lemme check into their claims dept and see if they have anything open in Michigan for ya in the auto division. Their claims office is in Southfield, which wouldn't be too bad a drive from any of the towns that you had mentioned. You're welcome to e-mail me as well at rtvelich at buckeye-express dot com if you'd care to give me any further information about what you've worked in or what you're looking for job-wise. Sorry to hear about the divorce and the stress. Sad

MTA: My in-laws have a cabin up in Glennie. LOVE it up there! Big grin

MTA (again) - Anya - I just checked out our job postings for Michigan and the only thing they have open are for PIP Claims Examiners. Let me know if you have any experience in this area or others and I'll keep my eyes open for ya.

Thanks so much! I used to be a regular auto claims adjuster for a while. Right now I work for a State Farm agent. I think I'd like to get out of sales, and get back into claims. I don't care, whoever offers benefits! I've never handled pip claims. But, I would be willing to start anywhere. I'll keep your email address handy and check the Grange postings. Thanks again !

Hey...I am a Senior Underwriter for AAA Michigan and we usually have openings in our claims department...check out www.aaamichigan.com for job opportunities! I see they have claim rep openings in Grand Rapids (quite a long cruise from the areas your family resides in) and also various claims positions througout the entire state! It's worth a shot!!

Anya~

Here's the link to check current job postings at Grange:

http://www.grangeinsurance.com/join_our_team/career.asp?action=become_an_associate

If you find something that might suit you, you have to complete the online Job Application accessible on this same page. I will keep my ears and eyes open for you as well.

You could also simply shoot a resume with an e-mail to the HR department just requesting they put it on file should there be a match with your job skills. That can't hurt.

FYI, I found my job with Grange 2 years ago through Monster.com. It's panned out very well so far too. Good luck and keep us posted! Don't forget to join the RA Michiganders group either. Wink
