I was/am training for Boston. I have suddenly acquired hip pain while running and walking. Last week was tough having to run in Sedona and Scottsdale Arizona, very hilly then a climb up and down Camelback. I ran 3 miles and had to walk back in anticipation of a 20 miler. It hurts in the front crease mostly and also the side and my back. Ok the run in Sedona was almost worth screwing up Boston. Any thoughts?
We've Got Big Hills
From the description, I still have no idea where you hurt.
I'm running somewhere tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful. I can't wait.
Poor baby
its right in here, where im pointing.

Front crease...side....back....sounds like it hurts all around???
Front crease sounds like hip flexor....ice and rest. Avoid hills.
Side...no clue....ITB? Ice and rest.
Back....piriformis irritation? Most often train through it and stretch it. Try some quick strides to loosen it up after liberal warm-up.
2012 goals: Fastest race times since 2006.

All around, exactly. Predominantly in the front possibly hip flexor area. Lower back strain on that side makes me think that has something to do with it. Anxious about how long this may take to heal since there is no running through it. Thanks
Front hip pain......I had that last fall right after I started running for the first time. I continued to run thinking it was just me needing to get use to becoming a runner. Did this for a week. Over that weekend I over did it and hurt my left hip so badly I could not walk. Had to go to the doctor for steroids. Doctor said I pulled a hip flexor and the only cure for it was rest. I was down for 7 weeks. Had to start walking and gradually build up. Was only able to walk quarter of mile the first week and build up from there. Lots of stretching it......google hip flexor stretches. Was very frustrating since I was training for my first 5K and couldn't continue running. But I stuck it out with the resting and gradual build up of walking. Iced it just before and just after walking each day. Also slept w/ ice pack on it. It paid off since after 7 weeks of all that I was back to the running and haven't had any issues since.
Hip bursitis is the most recent diagnosis with NSAIDs for 10 days from a second orthopedist. Two weeks ago my usual ortho dr, said it was lumbar disc issues. This conclusion came from a MRI from last year. It's better but still uncomfortable to walk and to run. Cortisone injection seems like a reasonable course of tx since it has already been over 3 wks. Any thoughts?
I had this (hip bursitis). For me it was plain and simple. Overuse.
The first time I had it was when I was just starting out, and it knocked me out of commission for two weeks. The pain was so bad.
Second time, I was "training" for the Broad Street Run (10 miler in Philly). About a week before the race I got a familiar twinge and backed off a bit.
At the race, I ran probably the fastest two miles I ever had in the start of the race then BAM! It felt like someone jabbed a hot poker into my hip. I could barely walk let alone run. After about two miles of hobbling, I managed to run again (probably a very stupid thing to do), and finished the race in 1:26.
The next morning, my hip was swollen out about an inch and all sorts of interesting colors. Scared the hell out of me. Eventually, ice and rest, another two weeks off healed it.

I used to get hip bursitis chronically. I gradually switched to minimalist shoes and it's never come back. Softer landings make happier hips.
