Torn Hip Labrum - advice, recovery and experiences (Read 573 times)

Refurbished Hip

Sounds like you had an awesome weekend, Dallison!  I've been doing most of my running on my rail to trail, thinking that will help in some way, but I don't know.  I didn't ask if I could run real trails yet.

Shu, I was also surprised by the, "Okay, needle is done, now we're going to shove you in the tube."  After laying down for so long with the needle, then getting propped up and having 3 people stare at me and ask me a bunch of questions and having me test my leg and then walking me down to the machine, I almost fainted.  Because...I don't know?  Haha.  But how did the hip feel after the MRI?  Did you have a brief window of no pain?  They told me to go for a run when the numbing agent was still in my joint.

    Refurbished Hip

I did my 90 seconds x 6 of "fast" running last night.  I covered about a mile.  Now I am kind of sore today.  I can't tell if it's coming from the joint or not -- it could just be high on the adductor.  Sigh.  Guess I'll wait till Saturday to try again.

Really?  I couldn't run if my life depended on it afterwards.   I couldn't even walk without limping.  My hip didn't hurt as much as it does today, but it didn't feel anywhere near the level of being able to run.  It felt awful driving home and trying to get in and out of the car.  Actually, the only thing they did tell me was no strenous activity for 24 hours.  Also, no beer for 24 hours.  I specifically remember the no beer thing because it made me .

Do you know what they injected you with besides the dye?  I was told that I was getting a numbing agent in my joint (lidocaine) and that it would be a good indicator about whether or not I needed surgery if my pain was gone after the injection.  Maybe your clinic does things differently. I mean, my hip did have that full feeling, but no pain.

MTA: I'm pretty sure not everyone gets that numbing thing, at least from the experiences I have read on FB.

They injected me with novocaine.  My husband had a lot of pain after his, too, so maybe novocaine isn't the best numbing agent.   I did test my leg to see if the pain when lifting my knee and crossing my leg in front of me was gone, and it was, so there's that.  I'm not too hopeful that this isn't a labral tear.

ETA: How fast did they get your results, Mandy?

            Hip Hip Hooray

That's almost exactly how mine went, shu.  My worst flare was definitely afterwards, too!  Fingers crossed for you.

              Refurbished Hip

For my first MRI results, I had to actually physically go into the office and the doctor told me...which I was think 2-3 days later?  And for my second MRI, the doctor e-mailed me the next day after I sent him a message via their online portal thingy asking him.  This is how I found out: "Amanda, your MRI does show a torn labrum. Assuming your pain was better immediately after the injection while your hip was numb, I would suggest consulting with Dr. Keene to discuss surgical options."

I am crossing my fingers for you, Shu.  Answers are generally good, but I have to say this whole labral tear is a really shitty answer.

Thanks, Oski and Mandy!  I'm trying to stay positive, but it's generally not working.  The guy doing the injection asked why i was there and I told him a possible labral tear, but I really hope it isn't.  He said "why, don't you want an answer?" and I responded "not if the answer sucks."

At least if it is a tear, you know what the fix is and what you're looking at as far as recovery, etc. Yeah, it's a pain, and a long layoff, but you're still young and if you get it fixed now you've got a lot of years ahead of you to get back running without pain (I feel like I said the same thing to Mandy not that long ago ).

Shu, the layoff does suck, but coming out repaired and hopefully better than before is a plus.

mandy, i know what you mean about the pain or something that resembles pain. I would assume it's the muscles around that area starting to become active again and getting cranky about it.

I ran 4 miles tonight and no real pain. The achiness wasn't enough to slow me down or make me stop. sitting here, i feel fine. It is rediculous how i have lost my endurance.

Keep at it, keep stretching, and keep icing. that's my plan.

You are so wise, Bat Thingy.  You must have a lot of life experience.

Dallison, can you describe the occasional pain you're having from your runs?  Is it the same as the old pain?  Mine is the same location, but it doesn't quite feel like the old pain either.

                          Hip Hip Hooray

Today marks 10 weeks for me!  Double digits!

I skipped my walk last night because my psoas has been acting up from the bike ride last weekend.    My massage therapist is out of the country and I have been too nervous to go see someone else.  I just can't seem to get it to release on my own though.  I feel like all I do is complain about my hip flexors!  lol

Have we heard from MrFinn lately?

It's definitely not the same as the old pain. It's more of a worn out pain, like the muscles in that area are not strong enough to withstand the stress yet.

I ran 3 miles this morning and the last mile was definitely a bit harder. It's really hard to explain where the aching is.

I was misdiagnosed a few times (groin pull, sports hernia)... it wasn't until i went to a specialist that they shot me up with iodine and took a mri that they discovered a small tear. The doctor told me i could have it repaired with surgery but i would have to find a doctor that specializes in that surgery. He told me that i could run on it ( that's all i needed to hear). I haven't run over 6 miles since the diagnosis, if my hip gets sore i'll take 3 to 5 days off...i overdid it once and got the ole kicked in the groin pain....i had to take 2 weeks off to recover.
