Starting over. (Read 1365 times)

After running the race of my life (a half marathon) last October, I have let my training slip.

This may have been partly because I felt I had reached a peak and will never better that performance, but there were several other factors I won't bother you with.

Anyway, I am back at it after a gap of a few months, and hoping it will not be as difficult to regain fitness this time as it was the first time!

A few months is not starting over, big guy.  It will not be as difficult. Now get on it!

      Giant Flaming Dork

Looking at the last year of training, you've obviously tailed off, but I don't think it's as bad as you think.

Your 5k PR looks a little soft compared to the HM...  Maybe focus on that for a little while?

        http://xkcd.com/621/

Thanks, I ran the 5k in August, and maybe not as hard as I could have.

The 10k time, also needs improvement!

I guess I have a bit of a different perspective than NadarAlfie's.  As someone who went from a couple steady years of just about 2k miles/year to 4 months of nothing, I've found coming back to be a serious challenge.

Although only a sample of one, my experience has been that aerobic capacity was much slower to rebuild than I ever expected.  I did expect that need to rebuild the muscles, joints and rehab the 'mechanics', but after 3 months of daily work, I'm no where near the aerobic capability I had last fall.

My point being, if I have one, is to really work on the aerobic rebuild early on. It was only when I moved to an hour per day of heavy aerobic loads that my body seemed to understand that I was serious.  What I thought would be a couple weeks of sucking wind as been 2 - 3 months worth.

Only after getting some basic level of aerobic capacity back I been able to try to rebuild the running capacity. It didn't matter before that I couldn't run for 3 miles due to mechanics, because I could uptake enough O2 to do it anyway.

Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

              I guess I have a bit of a different perspective than NadarAlfie's.

Nadar's a young'un, comparatively speaking.  He doesn't understand how long it takes us older gentlemen to get back up to where we were before.

              (No offense intended, Nadar.)

The difference here is Simon has been doing some maintenance running, and not completely off his feet for 3-4 months.  So probably won't be as bad getting back to his former mileage.

                We've Got Big Hills

Coming back after my Oct-March illness (mono) was not easy, and it is still a bit tough.

Hard or not hard to get back into shape  - does it matter?  Make sure to enjoy the journey.

Try some 5 and 10K races instead of 1/2 or full marathons.  Hope to see you post more on the 10K training group!

                      Just run, baby.
                        Just run, baby.

                        Wish I could, baby.

Just hobble while wincing and gasping for air. Gotcha.

Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.

                        Beware, batbear...

Go outside, run if you Will.

Now, my co-mates and brothers in exile,
Hath not old custom made this life more sweet
Than that of painted pomp? Are not these woods
More free from peril than the envious court?
Here feel we not the penalty of Adam,
The seasons’ difference, as the icy fang
And churlish chiding of the winter’s wind,
Which when it bites and blows upon my body
Even till I shrink with cold, I smile, and say
’This is no flattery. These are counsellors
That feelingly persuade me what I am.’

Sweet are the uses of adversity
Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous,
                          Wears yet a precious jewel in his head;
And this our life, exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in every thing.
