Eyewear/Sunglasses (Read 943 times)

baby box jumper

I think I need to get some sort of eyewear for running to deal with the sun (which I am sure will appear sooner or later). Was wondering what sort of features I should look for? Good brands, etc?

    thanks!

    The shirtless wonder

I think almost anything will work fine.  I've been wearing Tifosi brand sun glasses.  They fit well and thus do not bounce around while running (even if I prop them on top of my head).  The optics aren't bad and they are reasonably priced.  I think I paid about $60 for my pair.

      tipsy chicks

Ditto what Greg said.  Optic Nerve sunglasses are really great for the price, too.  I have a pair of the Eyeque model that I love.  They were cheap and are photochromic with a very wide range of tint.  I can wear them when it's overcast for protection from wind and they are almost clear, but if it's bright and sunny they get very dark.

I liked my Tifosi sunglasses until they broke.  About six months after I got them, I was cleaning them and the lens just popped out.  The little nub on the lens that holds it to the nose piece broke off.  I had never taken the lenses out so I was surprised that it broke.  And I couldn't find the receipt either...  Sad

However, the cheapo $20 sunglasses I bought from somewhere, probably Big 5 Sporting Goods, are still going strong.

Oh yeah, and the expensive >$100 sunglasses I liked I manage to misplace somewhere in the gym at work.  Of course, none of my esteemed coworkers turned them in to lost and found.  Grrr.  (But I'm not bitter about it.)  Smile

            Eyeque.

This name sucks.  Do you remember the beginning of That Thing You Do when the Wonders were named the Oneders, so everyone called them the Oh-ned-ers?  Man, Eyeque is just like that.  Of course, it is a cutesy way to spell out "IQ" with Eye because they's glasses.  But for non-native English speakers, it either looks like "Ike" or... much worse... "Ee-yech".

            Ah, Mel Cooley's glasses!  yeccch!

I'm assuming that you sometimes go outside when it's sunny out even when you're not running, right?

Well, do you ever wear sunglasses?

              Yes?

Okay then, what kind do you wear?

Great, I bet those will protect your eyes from the sun just as well when your'e running as when you're not running.

Sometimes I do venture outside when it is sunny and I'm not running. But I do not wear sunglasses. I wear my regular eyeglasses and wonder where I put my prescription sunglasses. If I found them though, I'm pretty sure they would suck for running b/c they are pretty heavy and don't fit that well. For running, I wear contact lenses.

I don't trust myself with expensive sunglasses.  The ones I bought a year or so at Academy have worked out fine so far.

                    Best Present Ever

Regular sunglasses bounce around too much in my experience.  I bought Performance brand sunglasses on sale at a Performance Bike shop (they seem to be on sale all the time).  They were about $30 I think, which was about all I was willing to spend.  They are kind of ugly, but they work, don't bounce, and have a good case that I can sit on without damaging the glasses.

All I care about is that the rims be made of plastic.  I've gone running in the cold with metal rimmed sunglasses and got a headache.  Changed to an old pair of plastic rimmed glasses and they have become the glasses of choice for winter running.

                        Get Lost :)

I had some Oakleys that wrapped around snugly. They cost $160. They tanned me to look like a raccoon.

Instead I have some NB sunglasses I found at the NB outlet. They cost $25. They do not make me look like a raccoon.

Not looking like a raccoon for less wins.

Glasses not made for biking/running tend to fog up in cold weather for me.  Just something to note. Maybe I sweat through my eyes.

The Tifosi glasses (as I am sure other sport glasses) mentioned above have a vent at the top which I thought was just a gimmick until I wore some other kind (and not cheap/drugstore glasses either).

I usually go to some cheap department store (Ross/TJMaxx and the like) and pick up 3 pairs of <$10 sunglasses at a time.  Sometimes I'll shell out big bucks for the 2 for$25or 3for30  glasses at expos.
