What's a good strategy for pacing oneself on hills during a marathon (versus flats or downhills)? (Read 773 times)

Frowzy, I raced a very hilly half three weeks ago. I knew it was hilly and prepared by doing my med-LR hard every week on a very hilly training course. If I had not, the hills would have gotten me. I started the race by pace. It was in the 60's with a strong headwind going out and I realized that running by pace wouldn't work. I switched to HR pushing to LT on the inclines and staying a few beats below the rest of the time. This would have been by effort w/o monitor. In retrospect, I ended up running it a little too conservative. I felt like I left a few minutes on the course. But, I didn't blow up and did PR. Run the hills by effort.
