Quote from Greg Rowe on 7/1/2009 at 3:17 PM:

I used Elixirs for all of my runs.  That includes at least one run over 22 miles. I was using Elixirs before I tried the Inspire.

My only complaint with the Elixirs is that they have "nobbies" on the sole of the shoe at the toe.  I wore through those VERY quickly.  But I wear my sneakers until they don't feel right anymore (rather than looking at wear on the sole).  I would get about 400 miles on the Elixirs before I replaced them.  By 400 miles the nobbies were gone.

Greg

Greg, that's not bad.  I think I will be lucky to get 150 miles before some big spots of midsole will be making ground contact.  At 80 miles there are a couple that are nearly gone, already.

I think my longest run in the Elixir has been about 8 miles.  I'd definitely go further if it weren't for the blister issues from the forefoot being a hair too narrow.  I do fine in lightweight stability shoes for long runs (wore the NB 902 and 903 in my 2 marathons--no issues).

Didn't mean to high jack this thread but one final question Zoomy or Greg or both or anyone: Relating the cushion between the inspire and the elixir...which has the better?

Thanks - Trey

Trey, I wore the Inspire 4 briefly last summer.  Cushion was probably more substantial in that shoe, but it was also too stiff for me, so I just use them as a gym shoe, now.  I think they use the same midsole material, just more of it.

I'm on my second pair of Elixir 3's and my first pair of 4's. My first 3's suddenly made my knees cranky at about 320 miles--one day they were fine, on my next run they gave me The Telltale Knee Pain. I do wish they lasted a little longer, but my first pair I was running 30 miles a week in only those shoes, now I'm doing 20 and switching between two pairs--we'll see.

They've been great for me so far--they're a smidge too stiff in the forefoot but I usually solve that problem by putting 20 miles on them. Otherwise they're a good mix of roomy toe box and light support.

My mizuno alchemys are a lot like La Squeak's experience.  I can get 299 out of them.  At 300 on the nose, they make my knees hurt.  One day fine, next day blam.

I guess mizuno is a lot like milk.

Need a hand deciphering which model is which.

I need a mid-range, lightweight trainer with some support.

Currently run most of my miles in Asics 2130s - so something roughly equivalent, but a bit lighter and more flexible.

Any ideas?

I am currently thinking about the Wave Inspire 5 (or 4 if I can find them discounted)

Purdey, what size do you wear?

The Inspire has more cushioning.  I prefer a shoe that doesn't feel "squishy" which may be partly why I prefered the Elixirs.  I tried the Inspires only because my local running store didn't stock the Elixirs.

Are you planning on doing the great shoe give away again?

Mizuno Wave Rider is my shoe of choice and has been for years. As a neutral stiker and efficient runner it seems to do the job. However, when I am training for a marathon or anything over 10 miles I like to have a little more stability...Asics Nimbus.

Talk about squishy...NIKE Vomero. NIKE finally get's on track though and starts refocusing on their "DNA."

Elixer's are fine, in  my opinion, as a lightweight racer...but for training the profile is too low.

It's not the midsole so much as the amplitude of the pback that makes it feel stiff. If you have a chance to go to a specialty running store look at the difference in the wave amplitude of the INSPIRE and the RIDER.

NB 1063 is pretty dang squishy too.

Really ... I dont feel that in my 1063's.  Now my Mizuno Inspire 5's I think are squeshy and wear them for shorter runs and/or longer races, but do not feel like as much support as my 1063's.

Hmmm, just got a pair of Elixirs at the Peachtree expo. Besides the fact that the name sounds like someone narrating a porno (he does what?), they seem good so far and very comfortable. I'll probably wear them on shorter, faster runs and maybe on key races. I'll let you know.
