Luckily (recapping for those who don't want to click), it apparently isn't due to production delays or "wow, our film sucks" re-shoots. They are just re-timing the release to pick a better opening weekend. A $$$ move. May have a lot to do with the possibility of an upcoming actors' strike making for stale weekends next summer.

Of course, that doesn't help those of us who really want to see it! And I'm still trying to process why delaying release by that long is good from a money perspective.

Bottom line: it isn't like Wild Wild West or other movies that went through turbulent reshoots/re-edits. None of the production staff seems to be killing each other.

That we know of. They'd just Dementor their asses quietly anyway.

Gives me a fighting chance to reread the book. Interesting reasoning though - film is done but we just want to wait until summer?

One thing I learned from the msnbc version of this story (here) is that the much ballyhooed Star Trek reboot movie has also been moved to next summer for the same reason.

Then I learned something even more interesting from that LA times article above. There's a Terminator reboot coming. And it stars... Christian Bale?!! WTF. I guess one way to avoid being overly associated with a role (Batman) is to be another Big Cheese role in the same timeframe. It has happened before. Not sure why this surprised me. Maybe it's the specific combo in this case.

(Everyone else but me probably already knew about the Terminator thing)

One theory is that WB want to shift the promotional costs to 2009 instead of being on the books in 2008 since they are not having that great of a year. Something is kinda fishy...why not take advantage of the Memorial Day weekend (May long weekend for you Canadians) for a blockbuster, mid July doesnt make sense.

You might be right, but based on the whole calendaring reasoning/excuse, I'd be willing to bet that there's already something considered BIG coming out on Memorial Day Weekend. For most movies, the biggest bucks are made in the first couple of weekends... so it is better to be the big movie on a weekend rather than having to share.

Dark Knight didn't come out until July and it is certainly raking in the coin.

Looks like Terminator 4 and A night at the Museum 2 are the only major movies coming out Memorial Day 2009. Harry Potter would take #1 at the box office over those 2.
