when i'm not running... (Read 1080 times)

Prophet!

i like to cross the ocean on a canoe. This was from my paddling race two sundays ago. Just thought I'd share my cross-training sport.
Very cool!! Got an open spot on your team?

        Cool hobby!
        derek

Is that water as rough as it looks, or it just the angle of the picture? I would have thought everyone would be wearing life vests.

          Derek

Steve, that is crazy- 43.83 miles with those waves? But it looks like a lot of fun Smile

Water looks warm and deep....wonder what lurks just below the surface And I agree with Derek...where the heck are the life jackets?
Run like you are on fire! 5K goal 24:00 or less (PR 24:34) 10K goal 50:00 or less (PR 52:45) HM goal 1:55:00 or less (PR 2:03:02) Marathon Goal...Less than my PR (PR 4:33:23)

              Prophet!

its actually a 9 men relay, so we have water changes (yup, nothing like floating in deep blue water in the ocean swells wondering what lurks below) and an escort boat. I'm actually planning to do two-man relay on a one man outrigger crossing the same channel in january which will be loads of fun. The water at the time of the picture is actually during a calm part, every once in a while there are 4 - 8 ft swells come rolling in. We actually like it rough because then you can catch the swells (less paddling Smile ). The day before the race they were actually projecting 10 + ft swells which would have made it even more exciting. Pam, we would definitely bump somebody out in our crew to make room for you Smile
I'm jealous Steve!! Very cool about the 2 man relay!! BTW since it's a men's crew, does that mean I need a sex change? Confused

                  You'll ruin your knees!

Just curious, the front 4 are paddling on alternating sides of the boat, while the back 2 are on the same side. Is there any coordination as to which side each person pulls from? Cool pics, cool hobby... Cool, Lynn B

steersperson (#6) will typically only paddle on the left side if there are waves to prevent capsizing because the outrigger is on the left side. Occasionally if the 'ama' or outrigger keeps popping then #5 will stay on the left side also as needed. Pam, you should see some of the top women's crews...most of them have bigger guns than me Smile . Unfortunately they don't allow mix crews (yet)..the women's race is two weeks before the men's. My wife has done about 6 or 7 crossings, while this is only my second time. So yes, either some form of sex change will need to be done either by you or by our crew Big grin Oh an by the way, Philly Outrigger Club
43.83! Dang. Any sharks or whales join you!?!? Y'all must have some serious upper body strength. I tried kayaking over there and was sore for days.

Wow -that is so cool. How long have you been paddling?

So Steve, have you talked it over with your better half? When's the surgery date? Clowning around Thanks for the link!! Definetly checking them out!

I paddled a full season about 5 years ago, which included pre-season long distance races of 8 - 12 miles iron (no changes), regatta season and then distance season, and ended with my first Molokai channel crossing. It took us 8 hrs that time because our canoe swamped in rough water about 6 miles from the finish. I haven't paddled since then until about a few months ago. At first i was just messing around but then i sort of realized that i'm in the best shape of my life from the running, so i decided to do the race. I didn't see any sharks (or if i did i refuse to acknowledge it was a shark but a smiling dolphin) or whales. Did see lots of flying fish, and one even landed on our escort boat.
