Got referred to a specialist and will see him after Thanksgiving.  Seems like the choices are either a cortisone shot or surgery.  I have a gut feeling that surgery would be the better way to go but am not going to jump to conclusions until I speak with the specialist.  Either way I will post the outcome in this thread.

18 months or so, yeah sounds about right.  Sheesh.

I just scheduled my surgery for March 3rd.  Fun.

I never went the cortisone route.  It just seemed like a temporary fix.  First they thought I had a FNSF, which got ruled out by regular MRI.  Then I was diagnosed with tendonitis and shipped off to PT.  PT didn't work.  ART/Graston through a chiro gave me some relief, but didn't last.  I was tired of going to appointments by that time and said screw it and did nothing over the summer but ride my bike, which I can do pain free.  Then I went back for the MRA earlier this month and finally got diagnosed correctly.

Let us know what you find out from your specialist.  Where are you located?

My timeline is very similar to yours, including taking a break from doctors for the summer because of hitting all of the dead ends.

I'm kind of surprised there's not more threads on here regarding labral tears.  There used to be a lot of good info from people who had gone through the surgery on Runner's World, but of course that all got deleted when they re-did their forums.

I feel cortisone shots just mask any pain. I am pretty sure i'll have surgery. But, for now, i have to wait until the new year to see the doc since i am out of vacation days for the year.

I was able to run 7 miles yesterday at a comfortable 8 min pace. tomorrow i hit the trails.

14 miles on the trail this morning. My ass is dragging now. I didn't really feel any pain or discomfort until mile 13. We got 14 miles done in 2.5 hours, it felt awesome.

              Any updates on this?

I have just been diagnosed with cam-type FAI from a bone spur on my femur. Doc is recommending arthro bone shaving with up to 6 month recovery BEFORE starting to run again.

Anybody else dealt with this? How did it go?

Any issues with insurance covering this? I've read about insurance requiring a waiting period after "curtailment of athletic pursuits".

How does one go about ruling out other possible hip injuries aside from getting an MRI done?  I'm dealing with an intermittent outside of left hip pain that reduced me to a painful hobble at mile 14 of yesterday's trail run but never showed up at last week's 23 miler.  No lingering soreness post run either.  Never bothers me in day to day life, standing, twisting, squatting at work doesn't bother it.  From what I've read it could be bursitis or a hip flexor strain or a labral tear.  Already signed up for two trail 50ks, first one in just over a month...

"hip flexor strain or a labral tear."

I've become too familiar with hip problems in the last two years to know either of these two would give you considerable problems post-run and during the course of the day, either sitting or standing.

Sorry, can't tell you what it is, only what it doesn't sound like.

There's a thread in the health section with some updates - Mendeldave started it and it sort of morphed into a injured hip hijack..  We should start a torn labrum master thread, there are several us dealing with this right now!  (my surgery is scheduled for may 2nd)

Hi dallison!  I got your PM, but I figured I would answer here to have more info out there for people in the future.

I am doing well.  3 weeks post-op now and recovery has been surprisingly easy.  I was only on narcotics for a few days before I stopped taking them.  I've had very little pain -- just a few achy moments, but it's been almost less painful than pre-op.  I was on the stationary bike (well, really just my regular bike on a trainer) the day after surgery with no resistance.  I sat completely upright and didn't use the handle bars at all so I didn't go past my 90 degree limitation.   It took for a few days for that to feel normal, but I've been riding the bike every day since with no problems or pain.

Supposedly PT is going to wean me off the crutches starting this week, so we'll see!

We do need a master thread!  It'll be really helpful during everyone's return to running.  I'm most concerned about that.

I second the master thread idea.  I have my doc consult in friggin MAY.  I'm bounce between no pain to really little little pain where really I can feel where the pain was, and it's kinda achy.  But, I'm not running.  I've noticed this past week that when I am on my right hip in bed, it gets a bit bothersome.  Sucks, because the rest of me is most comfortable this way.

It would be GREAT if MadisonMandy and any others could post something weekly regarding their recovery.  I'd read it daily but that's a lot to ask.   It's really something to have an injury that stops you from your passion.  The warm weekend we had was killing me, in the park with my kids, seeing all the runners go by.  That wasn't pleasant.

Mandy, I wish you a speedy recovery.  You seem like someone who'll be back to normal in no time!

Mendeldave - I get that same ache in my hip at night now too.  Ugh, sucks.

Thanks for the update Mandy, i appreciate it. I have a 10 mile race on Sunday and will run through tuesday. i wonder if there will be any negative effects if i run the morning of surgery to get my last fix?
