            Why? Just why?

People of Walmart was founded in August of 2009 by three friends and roommates after an inspirational trip to WalMart.

Let’s face it; we all have seen the people who obviously don’t have mirrors and/or family and friends to lock them in a basement, and they all seem to congregate at Walmart. It’s not everywhere that you can shop for milk at 10 a.m. next to a 400lb mother of 6 wearing a pink tube top, leopard tights, and hooker heels. Where else can one go to pick up underwear at 3 O’clock in the afternoon and spot the greatest mullet of all time paired with a mustard stained wife beater (which only accents the extreme amount of body hair) and camo pants that were actually used in Vietnam. And if you haven’t ran into the 6’2” bull-dyke with a shaved head, rockin a wonder bra, flannel cutoff shirt, and jean shorts at 2 a.m. when your there to pick up frozen pizza, Doritos, and Chips Ahoy cookies, then you can get the fuck out right now.

This is purely for entertainment purposes and strictly limited to the outrageously bad / ugly / creepy / crazy shoppers. We don’t need to see pictures of you and your dumb friends dicking around at Walmart. There is no reason to send us pictures of people that are seriously and unfortunately handicapped so don’t be an asshole. We are trying to have some fun here and there is a difference between someone who is mentally challenged and a person who has a fu Manchu and is still rocking MC Hammer pants.

We would also like to stress that we are in no way liable if you get your ass beat by Bubba when he catches you taking his picture. Be discrete, have fun, and Enjoy!

            You'll ruin your knees!

Obviously because you don't live in Tennessee.

...I thought I could pick a state or two for these, but was actually surprised at the mix of South/non-South photos on there...  The one from NY is disturbing...heck, they are all disturbing... except this one...

...I think I know him (maybe kin to him...)

              Get Lost :)

... and the sister site: People Shot At By People of Walmart.
Maybe I'm just cranky today, but I really, really don't get why it is o.k. in this country to openly make fun of poor white people.  Seems like an inexplicably-acceptable form of racism.  It's not overt, but we all know racism when we see it, albeit, thinly veiled.

If I'm over-reacting, please explain why.

No, no. You make a fair point, and people are sensitive to all kinds of things. To be fair, no group is off limits from a little humor, so long as there are no malicious consequences. If we can't laugh at ourselves, and we can't laugh at each other, then that would be a really, well, un-funny world. And in the real world, we can use all the humor we can get.

                    Do not attempt

They just post the photos they receive, I don't think they've made a conscious effort to make fun of "poor white people". FWIW, I see that every time I go there (not often) here in rural North Georgia.

You may be overreacting just a wee bit. They dressed themselves and went into a public place and they're fine with their appearance. It's not like they had some sort of disability that they couldn't help.

Hey, I just noticed, I used "they're", "there", and "their" all in one post. That's just asking for trouble.

Since when does poor = automatic lack of sense of what is appropriate dress?  Last time I shopped at Goodwill I found some really nice clothing for not a lot of $$.  My husband cuts his hair with an electric clippers...that costs nothing, but doesn't require a mullet or rat tail to save money.  The people depicted in these photos would likely dress that way even if they were relatively well-off.  Perhaps they are.  What does it say when someone assumes that poorly dressed people are poor?

                        • more off-road

                        • gain proficiency @ CX mounts & dismounts (ie stop leap-frogging w/people who ride slower after every obstacle -- finish further up the field)

punch Type 1 in the junk, again

I don't get why fat ladies can walk around in walmart in nearly nothing when it's packed in there, and not get looked at funny by anyone but me (at least seemingly) but if I run a 1 mile cooldown lap with my shirt off to avoid chafing I get sneered at by people watering their plants with hoses.

                          What does Tunis make?

If you were female and ran your cooldown with no shirt, you'd get even more attention, probably, so count your blessings, as it were Smile

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.

                              I wasn't assuming poor dressing = poverty.

Actually you yourself assume something about their being poor ("The people depicted in these photos would likely dress that way even if they were relatively well-off.")

I think just seeing this website suggested to my mind a basic double standard: anyone can mock poor white people to scorn in our culture with relative ease. I stand by this observation. It creates resentment, which reverberates back, and the beat goes on.

I don't feel like starting a high-intensity debate, but it just strikes me as hypocritical.  I'm obviously not personally offended, I just find it hypocritical.

As for "humor," consider this story.

                              What does Tunis make?

I'd say that almost anyone can mock anyone -- and many of us frequently do.

Are you saying that it is hypocritical for someone to complain only about certain types of mocking (eg, complaining only about mocking slow fat runners, or complaining only about mocking poor white trash, or complaining only about mocking people who post about mocking, or complaining only about people who mock people who use the word "complaining" a zillion times in one sentence -- and I use the word "sentence" here very loosely)?

I also don't know who you were trying to call hypocritical. I'm all for insults (as a lot of people can probably attest), but they're more fun for me when I can tell at whom they're aimed - and it's all about me, so make sure I'm informed.

It's a 5k. It hurt like hell...then I tried to pick it up. The end.
