I know the old school plaster and fiberglass casts and linings could not get wet, but I just learned that there are now waterproof linings that can be wet for bathing and even swimming. Is this something I would have to request in advance or is it used standard? Sure would be nice to be able to run/elliptical/stationary recumbent bike without a cast getting quite so nasty for so many weeks.

Not all ortho clinics will have the waterproof material. I find that specialty clinics mostly hand specialist clinics are more likely to have. I do not see it that often but occasionally a patient will request. Rather than a cotton like padding, the waterproof material is nylon like similar to very fine fishing line all weaved together. It is kind of picky like. I know it is waterproof but I still would not want to get water inside a cast PERIOD. The clinics I work at usually give some bags to use on hand/wrist/arm. They are like breeder bags/gloves and go up to your shoulder. I remember those from my farming days when the breeder came by to breed the cows You can buy them at Fleet Farm if you that type of store or ask your doc.
