Rescue dogs are awesome! Congratulations!

Best of luck training the new running partner! I have a miniature schnauzer that's almost 13, and he can still hang with me for 5 miles. My big tip would be to learn your dog's temperature limits. They normally don't do well in heat - mine begins to slow around 60F, and anything above 80F is too much for him. At 50F, however, he seems invincible!
Also I'm a fan of a harness-style collar, anything that doesn't choke the dog directly. They tend to get wrapped around streetlamps and poles, so standard neck collars could be harmful.
