May have overlooked this in the book...

In his plans he calls for training runs with # x XXX meters (ex: 8 miles with 10 x 100 m)

Is this 10 x 100m in addition to the 8 miles or part of the 8 miles?

He means part of. But it really doesn't matter since you're talking about potentially adding 1000 meters to a run, pretty nconsequential in the grand scheme of things.
