The Quad Cities marathon had tickets on the bib for one small slice of pizza and THREE (3) beers (!!!) and even though it was like Miller lite or something, I thought that was nice.
There were little burma shave type signs by that sponsor all along the last two miles that said things like.
Don't stop. Run faster. For the beer.
Almost to the beer.
4 minutes to beer.
Beer: 385 yards.
you get the idea.
However, a strange thing happened. I drank the beer. I enjoyed the beer. I did not take my time. And yet, I felt nothing. Why? I metabolized everything so very quickly, because my body was starved? I was dissapointed.

| Quote from Wings on 4/18/2008 at 3:29 PM: I grabbed one from a group at about mile 22 or so of the Richmond Marathon last year. However, I could only managed to drink a sip or so of it. Beer after the marathon is great...during is not so great.
Ya that is alcohol abuse. |

| I drank a little during my first marathon, which I think gassed up my stomach. I'll need to do a more in depth study though which means I should be out there attempting more marathons. |

I've actually drank beer DURING marathons, 50K's, 50 milers and 100 Milers.. in fact.. at the end of each race I've run, the first thing I do is suck back a nice tall cold one of my fav micro-brew!
Last November I was running in a 50 Miler whose motto is, "You can either run a good time or have a good time." it was pretty eminent that the running a good time was not going to happen. So I switched out my hand held filled with water for a hand held full of beer.... yup... I was now HAVING a good time.
Mmmmm.. Beer!

| It worked for Buster Martin. By the way, it is not a marathon but the Boilermaker 15K in Utica has post race Saranac beer. Now if only there was post race martinis! |

Disney marathon - yes that great marketing and merchandising company - has a rogue beer station at mile 21 hosted by the local hashers. Not sure how long they've done this but I've run four and they were there for all of them. That is the one drink station I love to visit and chat for a couple of minutes. Not sure what type of beer as it is in non-descript containers, but at mile 21 even Busch Lite tastes good and gives you that extra kick to the finish.

I just knew that at the finish line of my first marathon, my wife would have a beer ready to hand me.
She didn't.
My next marathon, I put a case on ice in my car and gave her specific instructions to get one out of my car and hand me one at the finish.
This worked. |

Disagree.
I agree with this disagreement.
Every marathon should have beer stations at a couple points late in the race. It actually tastes wonderful at that point and works wonders. No joke.
And there is no post marathon drink that compares to beer.
Did I stress enough that every marathon should serve it during the race?
Every. As in "all." Ahem. |

That was not homebrewed beer. It was "sports drink". Beer is not permitted in the park.
Right Thunder?
Carry on.
