The whole purpose behind the breaking glucose down is to create ATP. ATP is what the cell actually uses to do its stuff. It's the currency of energy.

There are two different pathways a cell can produce ATP. One of them is with oxygen, the other is without. You get lots more if you follow the pathway that includes oxygen. I think it's something like 2 ATP without oxygen, 36 with, but I could be wrong.

Anyway, the cell still needs the same amount of ATP, regardless of how it's produced. So, in order to make the same amount of ATP without oxygen as you would with oxygen, you'd have to do a heck of a lot more reactions. (Say the cell needed 72 ATPs. It could run the reaction with the oxygen twice and get 72, or it could run the other reaction without the oxygen 36 times.)

So, if a reaction has to happen a lot more often, the enzymes will get more of a workout. Therefore they work LESS if the cell is able to produce the ATP it needs with the oxygen reaction.

Does that help?

Reminds me more of an IQ test than an A&P problem...

That makes more sense, but my head is still swimming. I really wish I had had better Science teachers back in HS. My Chem. teacher was the WORST! Our Math dept. was also wretched. A lot of parents were ready to petition to have them removed not long before they retired. There's a reason I completed a BA (2, actually), rather than a BS.

It's only been a year since I had A&P... and I'm surrounded by nurses and a nurse practitioner... and we couldn't get it. Don't feel bad!

I'll let you know. I sent an email to my prof w/ a few questions that I can't seem to find answers to. I'm an obsessive compulsive perfectionist & any less than an A on everything is unacceptable for me, so I dig & dig until I have every answer correct.
I also worked for a fantastic general surgeon for 8 years who was an equally fantastic educator. He didn't just explain the what, he explained the what, the why, the how, etc of everything. He left me with an obsession to know every last detail of every little thing I study. I don't know why I'm working towards nursing, I should just bag it & go to med school...but I guess I'd have to actually understand this damn cellular respiration thing if I went to med school, hey?!

LOL! Yes, you'd have to learn it there too, I'm certain. And most likely in much greater detail! And understand all the chemistry behind it...

Let us know what the prof says, okay? The only thing we didn't guess was C. I'll be really annoyed if C was the right answer...

Is it too late to vote? I'm going with D. It's been a long time since I memorized the Kreb Cycle. However, I believe that oxygen is involved in combining with ATP to form ADP and H2O and has nothing to do with glycolysis. You need a biologist, not a doctor.

I agree with Mile Collector. Glycolysis is the first step in both aerobic and anaerobic respiration -- oxygen isn't needed in glycolysis, which is separate from the Krebs cycle (TCA cycle). Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm and the krebs cycle is in the mitochondria (correct me if I'm wrong). So, since pyruvate is transported into the mitochondria as it's made (transforming into Acetyl CoA?), the product of the rx is removed and glycolysis will keep on going whether oxygen is present or not.

Bingo, Poose, you are precisely correct!! Smile

I was leaning heavily on the oxygen thing...it took me until this morning when I was slightly more awake to realize that she was asking about GLYCOLYTIC enzymes, and as you said, oxygen isn't required in glycolysis. Maybe this is the reason why I don't do homework so late at night???

That's what I said... in a more roundabout way. Your explanation is much clearer. Thanks! Smile

Quote from backroadrunner on 9/9/2006 at 1:39 AM:
Any docs out there? Anyone just super smart than can answer a cellular metabolism question? I'm bloody stuck on this stupid question...

Glycolytic enzymes in human muscle tissue will work better if all of the following are true EXCEPT:
a. the pH is 7.4
b. glucose is present
c. body temp is 98.6
d. oxygen is present

My book & lecture notes are not helping & I've just spend 45 minutes reading medical journal articles (which usually fascinate me & I usually understand), and I'm even more confused about cellular metabolism than I was before!!

I can't wait to get into the identifying structures part of A&P...give me a cadaver I'm all set to go. Ask me about cellular respiration, DNA, organelles, etc, I'm either confused or sleeping!! Ask me breast or GI anatomy questions or anything related to general surgery, I'm like a textbook. This stuff sucks!

Thanks for any help someone might give!! I'd appreciate it!!

Eryn
