On the day he died, his job was to provide cover for three SEALs and eight Iraqis. A grenade thrown at the rooftop position they had taken after being attacked earlier in the day hit Monsoor in the chest and bounced on the ground.

He was the only person who had an escape route, the president said, but he threw himself on the grenade without hesitation.


I've offered before, and I'll do it again. Agree or disagree with the reason they are there, but God bless them and their families for their sacrifice, and bring as many home safely as is possible. On this, surely we can all agree.

A true friend to his unit mates and a courageous figure. Makes my aches and pains from running seem quite petty and irrelevant.
