Hi, I'm a 44-year-old runner, logging about 40 miles a week, and racing every couple of weeks in the spring/summer season. Well, a week ago on a very routine run I felt sigificant pain in my knee (searing!), had an MRI and was diagnosed with a torn meniscus and a baker's cyst. I'm scheduled for surgery next week, and am told that I'm going to have the "repair" and not the "trim" which means about a month off my leg and 3-4 months rehab. My doc. says I'll be able to make a full return to running. Do any of you have any experience with this? I'd really like to hear from a runner who has had the surgery. I'm very nervous that I won't be able to run marathon distances again, and am very distraught. Thanks! KBMM |

I don't know what kind of tear you had, but a few years back, I snapped my acl and was told I had torn my meniscus and crushed the top of my tibea (tibea plateau, they called it.) Anyway, I got NO surgery for any of it. The doc did say no more long distance running, but, after a couple years, I returned to it, harder than ever, and have had no problems. Done two marathons, 2 halves, a 50K and lesser races, too. I have no idea what a baker's cyst is, or how bad your tear is, but I'd think about getting a second opinion. I have no idea how bad my tear was, or if it was able to self heal. Your's may not be able to. I shied away from the surgery figuring, well, I can always get it when I'm "older" (I was @35 when it happened. Am 40 now.) |

Man, what is it with knees lately?
I personally have not suffered a torn meniscus so I apologize for posting. But as part of my job I review medical records from a lot of people that suffer these.
Typically, depending on the severity of the tear, post-surgery physical therapy lasts from 4-6 weeks. Although bucket handle tears take longer, but a bucket handle tear would be rare for someone your age.
You will be able to run again. The meniscus is simply cartilage so it's not like a torn ligament or tendon which takes more time to heal.
You will be fine. No need to worry. |

I tore my meniscus in Oct 2006, ran on it (in pain) for 3 months, got an MRI in Jan 2007 and scoped Feb 22 2007. I took all the drugs and didn't move around much for 2 days and then I was back at work on the following Monday (4 days post scoping). No crutches 6 days after and my first run I think end of March (short and slow). End of April 2007 I ran a 10 K in an hour and then it was steady improvement from there. Ran my first marathon Oct 2007 (4:40 min) and this year I can run back to normal at 8 minute miles for a 5K. My knee is perfect and pain free!
Oh I am much older than you and am 49 |

| My story is a little different. I was on the last mile of a half marathon back in November when some major pain came on while it eventually numbed. A few days later, went in from the pain and had an MRI. The MRI showed a small lateral tear of the meniscus. Had a scope to cut it out and some minor cartilage as well. I am now 3.5 months post surgery with the same pain. The pain comes on after 10 minutes or so of running (about a mile right on the head). Doc is going to attempt injections (lubricating). My second opinion will come in a hurry if the shots do nothing. It has been 6 months since I ran anything over 2 miles... That's my story. |

Might want to do some research on prolotherapy. http://www.prolotherapy.com/ I have an MD friend that is a top researcher on this, and he injected my right ankle after a car accident. I was skeptical, but it seemed to help quite a bit. Also, I know some friends who have had great results when they used it for back pain and knee pain. Just a thought... |

| I am training for the San Francisco marathon which is in August but I was diagnosed with a torn Meniscus. I would kie to do the marathon and do the surgery after the fact. My knee began hurting the first time I ran 16 mile two weeks ago. Any advice? |

Skip the marathon. You're only going to make it worse and likely be unable to run that race anyway. If it hurt with 16 miles, imagine how it's going to feel after 20 or 24.
