I loved Australia, I lived there for 2 years. I would move there but I don't think it's fair to take my kids away from their grandparents here, as Oz really is the other side of the world to us.

Any discussion of countries will eventually broach the topic of the islands of the North Atlantic adjacent to continental Europe. There's a disappointing lack of precision in the thread when referencing these islands so far.  Hopefully this diagram will help:

Most for me in a single trip: We left England, train to the Netherlands. Flew to Finland, ferry to Estonia. Bus through Latvia and Lithuania, train to Poland, then Germany, Austria, Italy, ferry to Malta, back to England. Home to Canada.

                Countries visited:

                Austria

                Belgium

Canada (home) - only visited British Columbia, Ontario (home), Quebec, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. I've driven through New Brunswick

                Cuba

                England

United States - visits only California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas (we've driven to Florida and through the US to the Maritimes so I know I've passed through more places)

Erm... In terms of physical countries we have England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Thet's set in stone.

In terms of politics, yes there is a separation between the North and the South of Ireland.

                  kk_kittenkat

But they're still fucking Irish (if that helps?)

Expanding on your lack of precision, I see.

Ireland is a "physical country"? It's an island, not a country. Funnily enough, the most northerly point on the island of Ireland is Malin Head which is in the Republic of Ireland, or in your imprecise language, the 'South of Ireland"

Nope thats slack use of language and basically wrong in all important aspects.

The Republic of Island is a distinct nation state.

Northern Ireland is part of the UK (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Unless you are actually posting from before 1922. In which case I call shenanigans).

The Constituent countries of the UK are not their own nation states, any more than say Bavaria. (Germany being the other Nation State with constituent countries)

MrH's diagram in in line with the international recognition of the situation in the British Isles.

I've been meaning to make up this list for myself..  Its easier to name states I haven't been to.  I have not been to:

                          Alaska

                          Hawaii

                          Kentucky

                          Tennessee

                          Arkansas

                          Oklahoma

                          Nebraska

                          Iowa

                          S. Dakota

                          N. Dakota

                          Wisconsin

                          Minnesota

                          Montana

                          Nevada

I dont think I'm missing out on much, except maybe in Alaska/Hawaii/Montana/VEGAS BABY!

I have only left the country once. Drove through Canada on my way to Michigan, before passports were required.  I am going to St. Lucia next year, so that'll be something.

That's certainly an interesting topic. If you are looking to count part of Spain as another country I think you need to provide a percentage of the number of islands that you've visited, given that there are more than two dozen.
