Good Bad & The Monkey

All I want to do is open a directory, launch a Word Doc and Endnote.  This is a fairly new box (1 year old) with good memory and processor running XP.  But it simply cannot seem to handle the background processes (which are few) and open a program.

Cripes.  I need to get Endnote on my Mac.

Those programs have been drinking buddies since college. Perhaps they just went out for a brew.

What is it running for a firewall/antivirus/spyware package?  If it is a single core processor, Norton (as an example, but not limited to it) can take over and clog the pipes.  Even on my dual core machine, Norton can take over while it tries to protect me.

You are doing something wrong.  XP is solid.

          Not at it at all.

            The main processes -

            Microsoft Forefront

            McAffee

            google calendar synch

Yah.  Admin controls it.  Nothing I can do.

Unless it is clearly in the middle of a big system scan, my bet is that McA is playing Kung Fu Theatre with google calendar sync.  You might try killing the calendar sync and see if McA rescinds control.

I was sort of joking, but you are welcome.

And I agree on the Firewall / AV software point.  Trent, how much memory is "good".  Paging is a killer of XP performance in my experience.

Yeah, I'm thinking reloading a corporate-controlled XP machine with linux probably won't fly.
