Who is the bigger jerk here? (Read 469 times)

So, I'm out for my lunchtime bike ride down Comm Ave to fetch some batteries for my boom box and some guy decides it's cool to sit his car on the bike lane. I slap his trunk and tell him to move over and then this cordial discussion ensues.

MTA: FYI ... It's really not me. I don't have a boom box.

    Feeling the growl again

I only fault you for allowing yourself to waste your breath having an "F you, no F YOU" discussion with the idiot.

No rational reason to be over the line except for a passive-aggressive need to be a jerk.

And I thought you would first find fault with my new hip lifestyle or boom box. You should see my new exxagerated mustache and unnecessary yet completely ironic glasses.

Meanwhile, I've learned this guy is an old pal of Whitey Bulger and has put a price on my head for disrespecting him.

Finding fault and laughing if I saw you with those glasses and a boom box on your shoulder are two different things.

I've slapped a few trunks, run on a few bumpers/hoods, and even taken off a side mirror in my time (guy hit my friend in a crosswalk on a red light then had the nerve to roll down the window and yell at my injured friend on the ground).  After a couple psychos made sincere efforts to run me down with their cars afterwards I decided they weren't worth it.  Sadly this is why I don't bike anymore either, the man won that one.

If he's got a hit out on you, just chuck a snowball through the open window next time...self defense and all.

I had a similar discussion once with possibly the same guy but driving a huge motor home down main street in Riggins, Idaho. He pulled up beside me while I was riding my bike and then swerved into me, forcing me off the road. He then parks two blocks further down so he and his woman could go grab a burger I suppose. I exchanged a few thoughts with him, and he told me in no uncertain terms that I had no business riding a bicycle on a public road. If I was the homicidaly inclined type, he would not have seen another sunset . . .

OK, I admit. It's not me.

It could have been but I probably wouldn't have hung out and engaged like that. I don't mind that he tapped the trunk and told him to get out of the bike lane but hanging out and arguing with a fool only undermined his position in my opinion.

              Why is it sideways?

That's a little slice of America right there. Nice clip.

Car is clearly the jerk. I'da swung my bike in front of him and not moved when the traffic started flowing. Wink

Nice work.  That was a lot of f words in only 45 seconds.

I've met you exactly once, but this explains why I didn't think it sounded like you....

In my travels, while I have found various Europeans to be rude in other ways (nobody is perfect) I've been surprised at how pleasantly some other countries...particularly the Dutch...seem to have cars and bikes co-exist with almost zero fanfare.  Really, it CAN happen.

But if you dare walk in the bike lane in The Netherlands, prepare for a stream of serious abuse from people on bicycles. That's a big no-no there, which I, as a clueless foreigner, did not know prior to that.

I've cycled in Amsterdam on their network of bike lanes. It can be as quick and fast paced as the driving. It helps to know where you are going. Folks are commuting and aren't goofing around.

Yes.  I was not on a bike, I'm sure it would be worse if you are a foreign idiot gumming up the works.  But for the locals knowing where they are going, bikes/cars seemed to get along famously (I've spend ~3 weeks total observing this).  Running and bikes was no issue either on common paths.

If I were on a bike as a foreigner, I am sure I would not understand everything and cause some issues.  It would be my fault.

Re PerfesserR, I caught on pretty quickly not to walk in the bike lanes.  I was pretty impressed though how the mopeds and bikes got along sharing the bike lane at very different speeds.  This was the big difference I noted -- people seemed to be less selfish and work with each other, and be more tolerant.  At least with regards to this issue.

The cultural difference dialogue is worth considering. But not here: You can see it says bike lane.
