Forums > Off the Beaten Path > Chicago, mid April. Anything to do?
Have to go hang out in a hotel next to O'Hare for a few days in mid-April. Other than the airport, haven't been to Chicago since something like 1974...so was thinking of a arriving a day early and doing some sightseeing.
Any suggestions for the 5 things you should do in Chicago (besides eat hot dogs, got that covered)? Won't have a car....so need to use taxi or public trans.
mta: Well...that was a pretty unspecific question on my part, which isn't helpful. I was thinking if I left if wide open, I'd get more good ideas....sorry 'bout that folks.
(not so good things for me: shopping; glitzy stuff; sporting events which require getting a ticket in advance/being organized/paying $18 for a beer; art museum. Good things for me: Worlds best food/beer available here; museum of welding and hammers; cars/planes/trains, Lucinda Williams in small club; cool place to walk/jog/sight see...)
mta #2: This is the fourth year for this same event. Same hotel. They take us to one dinner outside the hotel at the same place. I'm the only one who dares go out in the morning for run, the others fight for the treadmills and then ask me, breathlessly, about how it was outside the fence. I can't wait...
Best Present Ever
Hot dogs? One of the great food cities in the US and people go there to eat hot dogs?
When I was there a few years ago, I went to the Field Museum, the Art Institute, walked along the lake, and went to the Hull House Museum. The latter is probably a specialized taste that wouldn't make everyone's top 5. We went to the top of the Sears Tower just becuase it was there and so were we. We were going to have a drink in their lounge (same view, less money, as the restaurantup top) but you can smoke inside in Chicago and the bar was unbearable. I had the most delicious Greek food somewhere (sadly, I wasn't in charge of the food). My 9 year old daughter would have you go to the American GIrl Doll store, but likely you'll be less interested than she in getting matching pjs for you and your doll.
Beware, batbear...
5 Things I like to do in Chicago (home of my father-in-law - often visited):
2.) Also to see - Steppenwolf Theatre. At that time a highly anticipated revival of Sam Beckett's ENDGAME. If you appreciate the absurd, should be good theatre. I would love to go see that production.
3.) Eat some Chicago-style pizza. Better than the hot-dogs.
4.) See a Cubs game.
5.) Drink some Old Style
other stuff...
If you have more commercial tastes, there is always Broadway Chicago or Blue Man Group Chi-town.
Shedd Aquarium has fish.
Navy Pier has shops and general sightseeing stuff.
WGN building has a cool Bozo exhibit.
Lots of running routes, very flat, lots of water fountains.
2012 Goals:
1. 1500+ miles.
2. Streak starting in March or April if I'm healed.
3. 100 Push up challenge to get some upper body strength back.
4. Get weight under 180 by the end of the summer.
5. 1 or fewer alcoholic drinks 4+ nights per week every week.
6. Concentrate on 5K distance and September HM.
7. Have fun!
baby box jumper
And get some Garrett Popcorn!
Mimi Running at the speed of walk
3.) Eat some Chicago-style pizza. Better than the hot-dogs. 4.) See a Cubs game. 5.) Drink some Old Style
I'm sorry to contradict a fellow poster but I'm afraid I cannot recommend any of these as enjoyable experiences.
2012 goal = 4:59 for 1,500 meters. (before then just get healthy)
+1
There is a good chance they won't be eliminated from playoff contention at that point.
Thank you for taking the time to read my signature!
well, if you're there April 10 and like bacon, how about Baconfest Chicago?
Sweet mother of all that is good with the world, this sounds amazing. My trip is a week later. Dream...killed.
"Baconfest Chicago is a full day celebration of bacon: a Fest to end all Fests. Baconfest’s roster of bacon-inspired activities, bacon-foods, and bacon-spirits comprise the greatest single culinary and cultural festival ever dedicated to Bacon and Bacon only."
You'll ruin your knees!

It'll still smell like bacon when you get there.
YAYYYYYY BACON!
You may want to check out Millenium park. That is where all the tourists go. You also mentioned interest in museums about cars/planes/trains. I would suggest the Chicago History Museum. There is some interesting stuff there related to the industry that built Chicago and how it has changed over the years. They have an old 'L' car there that you can sit on and a pioneer locomotive.
Mmmmmmmmm...cheese and caramel mix
2012 goal: Hoping to qualify for and run the NYC Marathon
