Only after I run too much stupid. Check my log. I'm a touch sore now.

Stupid.

Trent - why do you consider them stupid? is that like aggression running?

On Soreness - my muscles sometimes stiffen up if I've pushed myself too much in either pace/distance/hilliness but it really only lasts the first few seconds of my run. Oh and after my first 10 miler I sat in a car for 2 hours - I was sore after that!

Could you be going to fast? and are you drinking enough water during the day (not during your run)?
Training is futile... i've seen the error in my ways...

Trent - Best. Log entry. ever.

I'm never sore. Longer distances don't do it, either.

I get sore only if I run too fast. Or I run down too steep of a hill. Or unless I play Ultimate. Or if I don't run for >3 days.

Hmm... is it too late to take back the "never" comment?

I get sore after a marathon or a long hilly race. Otherwise almost never.

As a somewhat new runner, I can relate to the soreness issue. Looking at your log I saw you went over 5 miles for the first time...it could be the challenge of the new mileage and the run before that you have "fast finish"...if you ran at a faster pace than normal and really stretched out on a run and you haven't done it before...the increased speed will make you sore. You did those runs back to back.

I was sore after my first 6 mile run but not after my first 8 mile run. I think our bodies have different threshholds of new mileage and speed that will cause soreness.

I am sore right now because 2 days ago I wasted 2 miles of a 3 mile run chatting with others on the track...looked at my watch and was not getting what I needed out of the run...So I picked it up big time on the last mile to the point of almost sprinting the last 250-300 meters ("fast finish"). I have run 3 miles plenty of times and faster than my overall time but I had not run that fast for that long in a while. That was 2 days ago...I am still sore today.

BTW, I ran 4 miles last night. Soreness was there for about a mile but worked itself out. I took it slow and slowly progressed in pace through the run. I was willing to back off and even walk the miles if I had to if the pain continued though...I didn't want to ruin my Saturday long run by trying to run through dead legs on Thursday.

I sometimes feel more tired when I'm trying to add on distance, but I'm almost never sore. The only time I've been sore is when I've tried to run hell bent for glory.

Maybe you should slow down a bit and remind yourself that you really do want to run for years, not months. Life is a marathon, not a sprint. Wink

I get sore after track workouts and races only. Long runs, a little stiff for a couple hours if it's longer than I've been doing, but not sore.

I have been running 5 months now. I am still trying to build a base. So I am regularly increasing milage. I find myself sore from running at least several times a week. Is this unhealthy? I haven't had any injuries so far that havn't healed up with just a couple days off. If I have made it this long I must have been doing something right. I want run as long as possible in my life. If I hurt myself now it may keep me from running later. On the other hand I want to build up a base as quickly as I can safely do.

How often are you sore from running?

Probably adapting to stress of more running or running a bit too fast. Try slowing down for a week and see what happrns. Or, give yourself a stress i.e. 20 miles a week. Stay with that 3-4 weeks and then put a new stress on body 25 miles per week. Stick with that 3-4 weeks etc.

I think the only time running actually makes me sore is after unusually long runs. However, if I'm sick, under extreme stress, or haven't been getting enough sleep (i.e. right now because of final exams for school Tongue), even short, easy runs will make my whole body hurt.

I have been thinking and I think I need restate exactly what it feels like. I don't get sore as in DOMS very often at all. BUT what I feel is a sorta really achy stiffness. I don't ever remember getting such stiffness before I started my running. Also I really enjoy playing basketball. I think many of the days I am actually sore is from playing ball. Since my heart/lungs are strong from the running I feel like I can play ball all out... little do I know that Basketball uses your body very different from running hence soreness.

I used to only be sore after a race but I don't recall a pain free run in the last 5 months. Sad

I was trying to figure out why I was really sore 3 10K's ago when I wasnt sore for my half or my other 10K's...oh yeah! That was the one where I sat around post race in low 40 degree weather for 90 minutes until my muscles turned to ice and then went out to run my friend who was doing the 30K in the last 2 miles. She was hauling butt so it was only a little bit below HM pace for me. Shocked OW

I too have sore legs.......everyday. However they are not painful but I am aware of the gentle throbbing and twitching. If I squeeze the calves or quads the soreness is more noticeable. I may be overtraining, but so far it is not a problem. On top of my running, my job requires me to walk 10km a day five days a week.
