2013 New York City Marathon Thread (Read 601 times)

You'll have to get up early either way, so it's a question of either really really early, or just really early :-)

Personally, I'd want to be close to my hotel immediately after.  I generally feel worn out (duh), maybe a bit sick in the stomach, definitely sweaty and stinky, possibly some burst blisters, chaffing that I'm just starting to notice and in odd places, and a hot shower and propping my feet up helps more than anything.

If you need to get back downtown, it will be at least an hour, maybe 2 or more.  And it's not like sitting in a car or something, it'll be a lot of walking, standing, navigating 1000s of other people frantically trying to get somewhere, walking down a block only to find the police have roped it off and you have to walk back and find a different street, then sitting on the subway all sweaty and drippy, etc.

I live in Brooklyn so my 7 NYCMs have ended with me hitting my YMCA for a loooooonnnng hot shower (my Y is a block or three from the finish).  Then I'm feeling a bit better and hit a cafe with friends and then maybe go back and cheer for anyone still trudging along.

Overall though, I'd trade some comfort post race for getting up extra early, you can sleep in the next morning :-)

Thanks, Mendeldave! BFF also said I should find something near the finish. I'm normally pretty fresh after my marathons (perhaps a sign I'm not running them hard enough - LOL!) but that sounds like a lot more time on my feet post-race than I'm used to.

I keep forgetting about this thread..

I live in NJ, after the race I plan on walking down to the West Side area and trying to catch a cab back to 33rd st for the PATH train..might be easier than relying on the trains..and the taxis take credit cards I used one yesterday ..took a cab up to Centeral  Park from 33rd for the Tune Up run..

You might be better off just walking down to the PATH.  It's not that far from CP and getting a cab during the marathon won't be an impossible task, but it won't be a fun one either.

You're right though, all NYC cabs do take credit cards now.

I agree with this. No matter where you are coming from you are going to have to get up super early and budget a lot of time to get to the start. But taking a long time to get to some place warm and dry afterwards is a drag. Even if you are feeling fresh, the weather is an unknown variable.

Whatever you choose, book as soon as you can. You may find that any hotel near Central Park is already completely booked and your don't really have a choice of where to stay.

Last year, I booked my hotel in August and remember all the cheaper places near Central Park were already taken.  I was surprised things filled up that quickly.  I just checked and the hotel I was planning to stay at last year still has vacancies for that weekend.  But, I'll try to book something this week.

I am probably going to book the prior week.  I just booked Chicago and I still have MCM to think about.  Bah, I'm probably going to end up far away.

Another week in the books!  After running 100 miles last week, this week definitely felt easy.  Generally, I'm feeling pretty good but I always feel like I could use a good 10 hours of sleep...  The most fun workout of the week was my track workout.  I went on a day when there were very few people on the track so I pretty much had Lane 1 all to myself.  I comfortably ran some pretty fast splits despite taking recoveries that were much shorter than usual.  The week ahead will be a hard one - more mileage and an MP run next weekend.

But, I still haven't done my logistics!  I just need to decide if I want to get to the City on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning and how much I trust Amtrak. Smile

43 days, people!  We can do it!

Julia, you are absolutely KILLING it! WTG.

My training has been going only OK the past couple weeks.  After logging a 60-mile week 3 weeks ago I haven't been able to get back to that level of mileage, 57 last week and probably 55 this week (if I manage the 20 I have planned tomorrow).  I had a cold at the beginning of this week which derailed my training a bit, and then this coming week I am going to have to rearrange my schedule due to some schedule conflicts, and don't know if I'll get my planned runs in.

I did have a very good 16-mile progression run last weekend.  First 8 easy, (~10:00 pace) last 8 speeding up from 9:40 to around an 8:00 mile (I think 8:04?) for the last mile.

I'm half glad I don't have to worry about hotels and things, but I do have to worry about getting my apartment ready for my mom (it's had some water damage I've been fighting with the landlord to get fixed) and that's its own kind of stressful!

Oh, and Julia- if in doubt, take an earlier train if you can.  I've NEVER ridden on Amtrak without dealing with delays of some kind.  Some times it's only been around 40 minutes, but other times (though mostly US-Canada trips; customs is a pain) it's been delays of several hours.  Just my experience-- I'm not a frequent Amtrak rider and I know that they *do* have trains that are usually on time, I just never seem to be on those.

MeaganSketch, The difference between 57 and 60 isn't that big of a deal.  Don't be so hard on yourself!  Especially if you've been sick.  I have a feeling something's going around and have been looking at people all skunk -eyed.  Smile  Yes, you are very lucky not to have to think about logistics.  Yeah, I missed the Series Finale of Party of Five - my favorite t.v. show EVER - due to Amtrak.  Thus my lack of trust.

There might not be much of a difference between 57 and 60, but there sure is between 57 and 64, which is where I was hoping to be...  That said, another good 20-miler in the books.

                            42 days to 42K!

Hi, guys.  I had a tough week with the death of my grandmother on Sunday night and the death of my coworker's husband on Thursday night, funeral, calls, etc.  I still have one more run with hubby tonight, but I did 22 miles with the last @ MP or however semblance I could do in mid 90s and 75DP at 8am.  I already have 75 miles for the week so close to 80 by tonight.  Peak week is done.

Damaris-  Sorry you've had such a tough week.  It's a lot to deal with at any time, no less so when you're trying to run your peak mileage.  You have my sympathies.  22 miles with the last at MP is amazing, as is the 75 total for the week.  I don't know what your taper looks like with 3 marathons in a short time period but I hope you get to relax a little before Chicago.
