However, do find a way to get an alarm installed when you can.

BTW, most standard alarm systems cost about $30-$35 per month for a basic package (usually after an equipment installation fee). Many homeowners insurance companies give up to a 20% discount on premiums; therefore it's quite likely that discount savings could mitigate the cost of a security system. In that respect, it's not very expensive. Mostly what you get is "peace of mind", and secondly a deterrent to crime. Smile

I want to get a motion activated recording of a scary dog barking, instead of having a dog. Cool

Don't see any problem here at all. You're not costing the company any money or loss since you don't intend to get a system anyway. It's not much different than me passing out my extra NRA member door stickers to my family, even though they're not members. And it serves the same purpose - burglar deterrent.

A large part of any security system is the appearance of security.

Three things that can increase security at your home (completely true):

1. A security system sign;
2. A large dog bowl on the back porch; and,
3. A pair of worn men's work boots, large, on the back porch.

These methods are all inexpensive alternatives to an actual security system, but they work just the same.

I take burglary reports on a somewhat daily basis for homes that have security system signs on the lawn and door. The bad guys don't care if you have a sign. Dogs are prob the best security system ever and they work for kibble. Yes

If you're not misrepresenting yourself to your insurance company, it's no problem at all in my mind.

No different to me than the person who puts a "Beware of the Dog" sign outside who has no dog...
