Painful calf (Read 892 times)

Anyone know the anatomical part that is cursing me, I'd love to know.  Small area of pain on back side of tibia, medial side, third of the way down from the knee.   Associated with this,  tight back muscles,  hamstring and a sore arch of foot.  Pain on calf could be confused with a stress fracture but it isn't, MRI last spring confirmed it.

This happened last spring training for Boston, struggled through then finally got better.  I have been running a hill run weekly and just fired up the treadmill for the winter with some faster running.  Any ideas?

Possibly the soleus on the medial side.  Feels like an attachment beneath the tibia, an inch long of tenderness.  Also hurts when I curl my toes.

Could be the peroneal or the soleus.

You got an MRI?  How did that come about and what did the doc say?

Ortho Doc ordered it to rule out stress fx, which I didn't think it was since it wasn't behaving like a stress fx.   I had the MRI 10 days prior to Boston and as a favor and under the circumstances I was given the results via a nurse and it was reported as "soft tissue inflammation, go ahead and run the race".

Update:  2 1/2 months ago the ortho doc said it was a back issue, do crunches, continue to run and I would get better.  So I continued to run on a very sore leg, miserable.  Dr finally ordered a bone scan which indicated a stress fracture on the tibia!  YES, I can finally stop running and heal.  This happened a year ago with the same symptoms and an MRI was negative for stress fx.

Four PT's didn't think it was a back issue and they were correct.  I have asked the Dr. to re-read last years MRI too.  Moral of the story:  we runners know our bodies pretty well, clearly he didn't  really listen to me and my symptoms, I said my LEG HURTS!  All this time and money and out of Boston this year, but the worse thing is trying to run through it.  My training will have to change and I will develop an appropriate threshold to ward off  future injury, wish me luck.
