I may be in Portland the weekend of October 24/25.

I will miss the Portland marathon.

I see the following Oregon marathons on the calendar:

Oct 24  - Columbia River Power Marathon
Oct 25  - Columbia Gorge Marathon

Any thoughts on these?

1. Not near Portland.

2. The 10/24 race was brand new last year.  RD is a maniac.  Tiny.  Pretty hard... a sand section in the middle.

3. Few folks know about that 10/25 run... even on the maniac board.  Most of us will be at Tri-Cities on 10/25.  This marathon is just across the WA/OR state line from the 10/24 race (30 miles apart, maybe?).  It is also a small race... but not tiny like 10/24's race... and well organized.

Almost easiest logistics possible for a double if you are interested.  Just note... not near Portland.

(for the record, I will be at Marine Corps that weekend)

Thanks!  Where is Tri Cities relative to Portland?

Sorry, I should have explained that nickname.

The "Tri-Cities" is collective shorthand for Richland, Pasco, and Kennewick WA.  The race hits each one.

The 10/24 race is in Umatilla, OR, just down the road.

From PDX, Richland WA is 230ish miles.

Got it.  Proximity to Portland is key for me.  I may go for a PR attempt a week before this, so a nice small marathon may be just what I need. Smile

Then again, the Columbia Gorge Marathon website and marathonguide.com entry make it appear as if the last time it was offered was in 2005.  I wonder why it is on the MM calendar.

Never mind, found it: http://www.columbiagorgemarathon.com/

Because there was a thread started on the maniac message board by someone who asked this very question and was answered by someone who seems to know the race org, and from that, it will supposedly occur - so it got listed.

But, this is why most folks are headed to umatilla and/or richland.  Most of us know squat about the other one.

Trent, one small thing to add to what srlopez says about the distance. It's a long drive but a very scenic one and also pretty fast with little chance of traffic.

The last 100 miles is mostly high desert, scenic for a little while and then just more of the same. But if you haven't been through that area much, the novelty of the drive can make up for the distance.

My BIL who lives in that area was once driving down the freeway and got passed by a tumbleweed. It got ahead of him and then took the exit ramp, zoomed down and through the stop sign and then up the on ramp and continued on ahead of him. Smile

Thanks.  At issue is the fact that I may have to fly back home that evening using a ticket from Portland, so the return trip is also something I have to keep in mind.

If you're flying from Portland and driving East to either of these races, stop at Multnomah Falls.  (This is an order.)

It takes only a few minutes to get out of your car and see the 2nd highest falls in N. America (#1 is Niagara).  Gorgeous!
